Since the update this week, my iPad just crashes out of Zwift whenever I try to ride in Watopia and Makuri Islands. Worked fine in Scotland and London.
Any ideas??

I can’t decide if that’s a typo or deliberate born of frustration ![]()
No sh#tting down of my iPad since the update yet after a few rides (3 of them in Makuri). Maybe it’s a specific version of the iPad? What is the type of iPad you’re running on?
Watopia and Makuri happen to be more demanding on the CPU than the other worlds, so it’s possible that’s somehow related. I would try doing a force quit of the app after every activity, if that doesn’t help, remove and reinstall Zwift, and if that doesn’t help do a factory reset of the iPad.
Or possibly he’s using an ancient Ipad and the game has finally progressed beyond it’s capabilities?? ![]()
Thank you everyone. Some good thoughts here, especially that Watopia/MI are more demanding. iPad is several years old, so may be time to upgrade.
Regards
John
Yeah possible but we don’t know which iPad it is
Apologies. Bad mis type in heading
iPad Air 2
Pro 9.7 inch
OS 16.7.12 (up to date for what is available)
note - has been working fine before this week
I think the subject header describes the problem perfectly. I wouldn’t even want to use my Samsung A8 to try and run Zwift. Just going through the process of a system upgrade myself with a PC and you need a whole lot of grunt to run Zwift if you want a flawless top level experience. An iPad or my Samsung is great for running the Zwift Companion App but that’s about it.
The iPad Air 2 (released 11 years ago) is quite slow by modern standards and is the oldest iPad still supported by Zwift, so if you’ve been thinking about replacing it, that’s not a bad idea.
All the specs I’m reading about the iPad Air 2 say it only supports iPadOS 15 so I’m wondering if you actually have something else or perhaps the info I’m reading is incorrect. (If you go to Settings → General → About you can find the model name and model ID)
The usual advice about tablets applies: power it off and back on again, check if the storage is getting full, remove Zwift and reinstall it, if all else fails do a factory reset of the device. You can also contact support and have them check your game logs to see if they can identify the cause of the crash. If it’s been a long time since the last factory reset of the device, that is a good thing to do occasionally. It also usually helps recover some storage that is lost over time.
Thank you Paul
Hello @John_Waddington welcome to the Zwift Forums! I’m sorry for the particular circumstances that brought you here.
Thank you for reporting this experience. We’re aware of a RAM-related crash that can occur on older iPads, particularly the iPad Air 2 (aka iPad5,3/iPad5,4). This is being addressed in a coming version update, so you may not need to replace your iPad just yet.
Until the next update is released, I recommend force closing all background applications in order to give your device as much available RAM as possible. If you keep running into issues, please feel free to reach out to us in Zwift Community Support.
So great to hear! I’m having the exact same issues with my iPad Air. Did a ride with robopacers but nothing else would work, it crashed every time. Was afraid I couldn’t ride anymore ![]()
@Maike_D If you’re encountering crashes when trying to start a workout from the home screen, one workaround that might help would be to start your activity as a free ride, then select your workout from the in-activity menu. It’s not 100% perfect, but should allow you to get some variety in your activities until this issue is fully resolved.
Thanks for your reply! I’m aware of that trick… problems with starting activities from Home Screen have been going on longer and that has been an ok workaround. Right now Watopia and Makuri won’t load at all. I guess I was lucky yesterday ![]()
Will this fix a similar-seeming issue on Apple TV HD, model A1625, which also has only 2GB of RAM?
Both issues are being addressed in the next full version release.
