Zwift Play Controller connection issues

I edited my original post to reflect the fact that my failure occurred this morning when running ZCA 3.49.1. I just confirmed that the ZCA was updated to 3.49.1 yesterday.

So yes, I’m having the problem with the ZCA crashing on 3.49.1 when making changes to an ERG workout intensity using the Plays running Win11 and BT pairing a Kickr Bike via the ZCA.

Zwiftalizer link:

I attached a zwiftalizer link to my original post. The failure occurred at about 9:16 into the 1hr3min London activity.

As can be seen on the BT Trainer Resets graph, I was able re-establish a BT connection via the ZCA several times but for each attempt the ZCA immediately crashed after a successful pairing. However, upon my last (3rd) pairing attempt the ZCA did not crash and I was able to complete my ERG workout.

Each re-pairing attempt required a restart of the ZCA.

Thank you @brumohr ! This seems like a new issue. I’ve flagged this up at HQ and we’re working on it.

Swift hub Swift play polar heart rate monitor, Garmin V3 pedals all connecting through Swift companion into an Apple TV , all with latest software and firmware

Often Swift play boxes will be ticked, and show in game, but don’t work
Have to wait for haptic ?

Today the buttons started working 30 minutes into a group ride at which point the power from my V3 pedals, acquired a 15 second lag, at which point, I manually turned off the swift play buttons, and the power was fine.

Hi @SteveK , the issues with waiting for the haptic to be fully paired should be addressed by Zwift version 1.45.0. That lag you were experiencing may be a network or Zwift Companion issue rather than a Zwift Play issue, but we’d be happy to help troubleshoot further if you’d like to open a Support ticket.

My play controllers have not worked last 2 updates. Using a Mac M1 Gen 1, no issues upon first delivery or multiple rides - now the behavior is that the play controllers will connect for a second then disconnect. I have tried the workaround of go to pairing with them off, then trying to connect one at a time - I can not even get one to connect.

Is this a known issue? any other workaround?

Please advise

Mine used to pair fine but since 1.45 have stopped and I have to unpair them. Then pair one at a time and wait for the haptic feedback before pairing the other.

I had an odd one today where the controllers paired fine, and the lights were solid.

Once I started my session, the controllers decided they weren’t paired (lights flashing), but the game still thought they were paired (telling me to press Y for a powerup, press Z to return a Ride On).

Turning the controllers off and on again didn’t help; they still showed as paired on the Pairing screen though.

Unpairing them and re-pairing them did fix it, but that meant going into the Pairing screen and losing the group I was with.

@Chris_Holstein_Pacti & @Chris_Holton , it sounds like you’re experiencing the disconnect/reconnect issue that is still being fixed. If you have the option to connect your bluetooth devices using Zwift Companion as a bridge, this may be a workaround for you in the meantime. Additionally, many Zwifters have noted that this issue does not occur when their Play controllers are plugged into power during their activity.

I’ll be happy to continue troubleshooting with you in this thread or via Support tickets if the issue persists, especially if we see it beyond the next updates.

@Daren , your experience sounds related to an issue that we’ve seen on Android related to auto-pairing. This should also be improved in the next release.

I am using an Android phone so that sounds probable. :ride_on:

@Rowdy thanks, I tried the companion app - no luck, but I tried with them plugged to power, and although it took a little over a minute for them to connect and stay connected, they stayed connected and worked for my ride today (1 hour). Please note the right controller although it worked none of the written prompts appeared, and both if you streamed the “other way” like try to steer left with the right controller it would apply the brakes, the the brake button did nothing on either controller. Thanks for the tip - hopefully this gets sorted soon they worked great straight out of the box LoL… Chris

Thank you Chris! I’ll keep checking in on each update.

Can you clarify what you mean by “steer left with the right controller”? It sounds like they are working as expected, but I want to be sure. Currently, the analog paddles can only steer to their respective side and brake. (Support Article)

@Rowdy Then they are acting as intended - I thought when I first had them I could steer both ways with either orange toggle, and the brake was a button to the side.

Today the right only steers right the orange toggle if pushed the other direction applies the brake, the brake button does nothing. This is the same on the other side just reversed.

I think Chris has this problem when there is no Rear Red Light on the Bikes…then you don’t get any prompts appeared

I don’t think that is my issue.

it doesn’t un pair and pair during the game it is just the initial pairing that now doesn’t work.

but if i untick them and pair them one at a time making sure the first one has paired properly before pairing the second it works fine.

Hello,
with 1.45 my Zwift Play Controllers suddenly vibrating during a ride. Is this a reconnection of the controllers?
An other issue is, that I have also connected my Bluetooth headset to the pc. When I press a button or steer, music stop and continue after I release the button. Is this a normal behavior?

Hello @Jurgen_Zimmermann , I’ve flagged up the audio issue at Zwift HQ. Could you please detail what headphones you are using and what application is playing music? Also, does this stop the in-game audio? Any other details you can think of will help us zero in on this.

The sudden vibrations would be a case of your controller reconnecting if you aren’t pressing any buttons or moving the paddles. Otherwise, the controllers will vibrate in a few situations (e.g. applying brakes, returning a Ride On, using powerups, etc.)

I am using JBL Reflect Mini NC headphones and I was listening to Amazon Music over Windows 10 App.
I am not sure if in-game music also stopped. Will test it next time.

The vibration come out of no where, so I think it is a reconnection.

@Rowdy Well not working today - different behavior… powered up with both plugged into power, the Zwift Pairing Screen showed them as connected (Bluetooth and the checkmark and showed the battery level on the pairing screen) when I “jumped” to the ride the HUD did NOT show them as paired, and neither worked, I tried to reconnect while in the pin but could not get the HUD or the bluetooth paring screen to show them connected.

Although not showing connected - the right controller would allow the “B” and the “Y” buttons to work - nothing else. The Left controller was completely disconnected.
