Zwift Play Controller connection issues

Hi @John_D_Oh , welcome to the forums. It does sound like your Play are not fully pairing to Zwift. It’s not happening to everyone, but there’s an issue where the controllers may not show their battery level in the pairing screen. If this happens, they may not work properly in the UI or in activities. If you notice that your battery icons for the Play are empty, I recommend launching Zwift with your Play turned off, then pairing each controller one at a time.

This workaround will only need to be temporary until the fix is implemented in a later Zwift version.

Thank you. That worked.

The firmware upgrade made my controllers useless today, I’d recommend not updating if you can help it. The workarounds in this thread did not help. I had been pairing through companion because PC Bluetooth was a total fail—now companion refuses to pair.

Ran through the workarounds for a second time and the controllers worked without crashing Zwift. Had to hold my head just right. The controllers are just pretty flakey at this point, but your mileage may vary. How long until a fix to this “upgrade”?

updated the firmware on tuesday, haven’t had any issues

This issue is still ongoing here… my solution 2x now? I have deleted the Zwift app off my ATV and reinstalled it. Seems to be the fix for a few days then I have to do it again. Not really a viable solution…

sometimes this workaround works and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m glad it’s not only me as I seriously thought I was going crazy here

Hi @Tamara_Christina , I’m sorry you’re still experiencing these problems. It sounds like you may be running into the problem when your Play autopair to Zwift, (I’d have to take a look directly at your activities to be certain). Deleting Zwift from your AppleTV will clear any autopairing connections, so that might be why it’s a workaround for you.

Thankfully, these issues are being addressed in coming updates, so either way you should not have to keep doing any workarounds for too long.

Thanks Rowdy. I have been in touch with tech support a few times and have definitely done absolutely everything correctly on my end. Was working ok til I did the update to 1.44 today then boom, no more battery green charge showing yet what’s so weird is that in ride it shows it all connected etc. That’s the frustrating part of it all. At any rate, deleted today again and reinstalled… worked after that but I’m about to go lead another ride and we shall see… lol

So I bought an ANT+ as an attempt to lower the amount of bluetooth connections on my windows PC. I’ve always used bluetooth only. I connected the power, cadence, control & HR to the new ANT+. Leaving only zwift play on bluetooth. The zwift play was still intermittently disconnecting. So it can’t really be a too many bluetooth connections issue.

Interestingly, I have another windows PC I never use for zwift because the screen freezes while running the game (it has for years). I tried zwift on it again to test the zwift play and it has no problem running all bluetooth connections, including zwift play, with no dropouts. Problem is the screen still freezes. So one PC I’ve used for years on zwift has all the issues with zwift play, and the other doesn’t (but still freezes up during rides).

All updates done. Zwift and controllers…
Same problem as always…
Windows 10 PC.
With my old Bluetooth adapter 5.1 is everything o.k.
With my new Bluetooth adapter 5.3:
All Sensor paired. Start the Controller…
Zwift found the left!?! Then the right one. Field is still orange. Battery indicator empty. Right is gone. Left is gone. Bluetooth is completely gone.
No connection to the KICKR etc. And Zwift crashes sometimes. In order to reactivate Bluetooth, the PC must be restarted, since Bluetooth is no longer available with other software, such as MyWhoosh.

In my experience I’ve found adapters claiming to be 5.1 & above to be unreliable. A standard 5.0 has proven to be ultra reliable for me.

Did at least 50 Zwift workouts/races with the 5.3. Before Play Comtroller. Everything was OK.

It’s very device specific from my experience. Certain combinations just don’t seem to play nicely with each other.

My treadmill was having connectivity issues with Zwift on a 5.1 dongle, it kept dropping out. Went back to a 5.0 and it’s rock solid.

It could be that this particular dongle is the issue but I’ve done some decent testing of varying Bluetooth issues and my opinion is that sticking to tried and trusted seems to work best.

How long Rowdy? My play controllers don’t work at all now on ATV. In fact won’t recognise anything anymore using companion all as a bridge.

Zwift play
Bought and worked perfectly
1.1 kept disconnecting at random intervals and couldn’t reconnect
1.1.1 won’t even connect now and in fact no devices will connect through companion rendering them completely useless.

Surely firmware updates should make things progressively better not worse?

@Neil_UK The most recent update for Zwift Companion (3.49) made some improvements to Bluetooth device handling. I would like to know if Zwift on your Apple TV is still unable to recognize devices via ZC bridge.

There are more improvements coming. Both Zwift app version updates and Zwift Play firmware updates will continue to improve the pairing experience.

Thanks for the update. If I use the zc app to pair and don’t add play controllers everything works ok. When I include play controllers everything disconnects and won’t reconnect. I’ve honestly never had any connection problems until I got zwift play. My set up is solid. I’ve not used play the last few times I’ve ridden and I’ve had zero problems so there is definitely a problem with play on ATV.

I’m glad you are trying to address these issues and appreciate your help and communication.

Thanks

I am having the same issues where the left controller won’t connect at all and the right controller is connects/disconnects on a regular basis. The computer is brand new (18 hours), the controllers are on firmware 1.1.1

In the Zwift log, there’s a line that keeps occurring over and over that an input controller is trying to contact a phone at an IP address and port, and failing. That phone was the one that I used to load Companion app to do the firmware update. I don’t use Companion for anything else so I deleted the app.

So does that mean now am stuck always using that phone/app to connect to the play controllers?

Since update 3.49.1, ZCA crashes when attempting to adjust (+/-) intensity on erg workout using Plays. I lose all BT connections upon ZCA crash and avatar comes to a stop.

Hi @brumohr, that sounds like an issue that was fixed with ZC version 3.49.1, where crashes were occurring for Zwifters running ZC on iOS. It’s not specific to the Play, but rather the ZC bridge connection. Has this occurred for you on 3.49.1 as well?
