Connecting Garmin Heart Rate monitor

That is interesting, your Garmin 520 is ANT+, how do you connect with Zwift - ANT+ or BLE? There are so many users reporting problems with Garmin HR - could it be the sensor is “sleeping” and the 520 “wakes it up”?

I use an ANT+ USB dongle
It sure feels like the 520 wakes the HRM up. I’m not familiar to how a “dumb” (no on/off) HRM is working. Is it normally always on and transmitting or is it normally “woken up” by a receiver?

I use Polar H7 and Quadlock - both start transmitting when on the chest strap.

My Garmin Dual HRM has been faultless with Zwift for over a year, just got a new Garmin 130 with a new HRM to use only my TT bike.
Foolishly it now seems I set it up in the same room as my indoor setup and now Zwift won’t sync with my HRM via bluetooth.
Macbook Air was not on but not logged on to Zwift and in the room.
Both HRM’s work with the 130.
Tried removing etc from the 130, makes no differance.
Any ideas would be greatly received.

My Macbook Pro 10.10.5 easily connects to my CylceOps trainer for power, cadence… but no heart rate. From what I’ve read above, if I want my Garmin hrm to be read by zwift i just need to purchase an ant+ dongle for 20 bucks or so? is that correct??

Depending on what version of Garmin HRM you have that is correct. Only the Garmin Dual broadcasts in Bluetooth and ANT+. All the other garmin HRMs only broadcast in ANT+ and on computers would require an ANT+ dongle

I have problem with connecting my Garmin Heart rate HRM-Run™ with ZWIFT.

I have Elite Suito, and I am using Lenovo ideapad 330 laptop, with Windows 10.
The warning triangle is shown next to the ANT+ icon on the top left of the pair screen.

It connects everything except HR monitor.

Is it necessary to have ANT+ dongle in order to connect my heart rate monitor?

Can anyone help me?

The answer is in the post right above yours.

Yes you need an ANT+ dongle to use the HRM-Run

  1. Until this week I have never had a problem connecting my Garmin HRM to Zwift. About 2 years.
This week I have decided to try a multi-day ride.
Simply hop off the bike while keeping the Zwift app running.
On the second day all of my sensors said they were disconnected. I was able to reconnect to all except my HRM.
I run a Garmin 1030 simultaneously with Zwift, and always have, HR remains.
I will finish this long ride this evening and will reboot and see if my HRM comes back to life on Zwift.

It’s probable that your sensors go to sleep after extended inactivity to save battery. Why the HRM didn’t re-connect automatically after coming back - don’t know. Did you go to the Menu button in-game and reconnect manually?

Just finished my ride. After saving and backing out of Zwift I restarted the app and pretended I was going to ride.
When I told Zwift to look for sensors, voila my HRM was there.
I think some minor glitch occurred between day1 and day2 that kept the HRM from reconnecting.
I did lose power for a few hours on day 1 evening, and luckily my laptop kept the app open.
Anyhow I managed to complete one of the longer courses, but only 2 hours of HR.
I guess I rode dead the last 3 hours!

And yes I did have to reconnect to all of my sensors on day2. HRM is the only sensor that failed to connect to zwift.

Are your sensors ANT+ only? Or do they dual-broadcast in Bluetooth also?
What device are using to run the app (i.e.iOS, Android, PC, Mac, Apple TV)?
Do you have an ANT+ dongle connected?

I am assuming ANT+ only, but not really sure.
Zwift is running on a PC (laptop) Windows 10 which is pretty much dedicated for Zwift use.
I also use Zwift Companion app on my Android device which remains within arms reach while Zwifting.
Power, Cadence and Controllable devices all reconnected without a problem.
Only the Garmin HRM failed.
After I completed the ride I saved and exited which in turn closed the zwift app.
I then reopened Zwift and ALL sensors including the Garmin HRM reconnected.
The HRM always connected to my Edge 1030 and as a precaution I installed a new CR 2032 battery.
The battery change didn’t help, but now I have a good battery that should last through 2021.
Next time I take an extended break I’ll see what happens.

Most Garmins HRM’s are ANT+ only. Just two of their most recent HRM models are dual Bluetooth / ANT+. I bring this up because if the HRM is using Bluetooth LE - most BLE transmitters can only bond to 1 receiver at a time. If it’s paired to your Edge 1030 then that might explain why it’s not visible to the Zwift app?

The issue in your specific situation is somewhat unique in that you’re leaving a session open for 2 days with a substantial gap of inactivity. I’m not sure how the Zwift app handles sensor re-connections during such a long period of inactivity within one session. That use case is definitely outside the norm.

I would imagine that you can stay in the game, hit the Menu button, click the Pairing icon, and manually pair all sensors from there? Did you try this manual method, or just count on the re-connection to happen automatically?

Actually I had to reconnect all sensors with the manual method as you described. Otherwise, no cadence, speed, wattage. Once reconnected they worked flawlessly. Only the HRM would not reconnect, and it is not a dual. It is ANT+ only.

Still the HRM drop and inability to reconnect. Working flawlessly sending data to my edge 1030.
Had an issue during yesterday’s ride that is perhaps related IDK? Power and cadence locked up and avatar kept at that pace after I stepped off the bike. I unpaired and reconnected to my Saris H3 and the problem persisted. I also disconnected from my HRM.
I then unpaired and power cycled my H3 and again reconnected. Power and cadence returned to normal but I was unable to reestablish a connection to my HRM.
The controller sensor is saying that is connected via BLE. That is the only sensor that is displaying the BLE icon. I do not remember ever seeing that is the past.
This has me scratching my head…

Just wanted to follow up. My problem with ANT+ has been resolved. All connections to my PC were via bluetooth. For some reason my ANT+ dongle was not working. I unplugged my usb extension cable, then plugged it in again and all ANT+ sensors were found and reconnected.
Simple problem and solution. I just never realized that my computer was not receiving any ANT+ signals at all. Right now. Life is Good.

Thanks for looping back to report great news. We love to hear how you solved it.

And it sounds ridiculous, but “unplug the dongle and plug it back in” does work in some cases. The reason for that is that when laptops go to sleep, they can shut off power to their USB ports, and this disables the OS drivers for the devices plugged in to them. In some cases, you may have to reboot the computer or unplug/replug the dongle to enable it again.

I also learned this week from a colleague that these dongles can go bad and send error-filled signals, so yeah - technology isn’t bulletproof.
