Zwift Ride & Zwift Cog v2 - Gear Shifting Problem

Hey everyone,

I’m running into a weird gear-shifting issue with my Zwift Ride and Zwift Cog v2. I can’t shift beyond gear 1 - every time I try to shift up, it immediately drops me back down.

Makes the controllers pretty unusable. Has anyone else had this happen with the Zwift Ride and Cog v2? Any tips on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Elliot

Just encountered the same issue. I finished the Kitchen Sink workout in ERG mode with no issues but once past the finish line I couldn’t get the bike the change gear. Every shift ended back to Gear 1. I tried rebooting the Ride controllers but that didn’t help. Need to find a solution now.

Hi @Elliot107 welcome to Zwift forums.
Shuji at Zwift HQ here. I scanned through your server log history and noticed your 13.5 mile ride yesterday included the Fitness Jumpstart 30-20-10-GO! workout on Watopia’s Waistband.

Since you and @Peter_Reilly_SCC are both mentioning workouts in ERG mode - I’d like to ask for more context on when during the session this gear 1 issue happened. More specifically, if it was before, during, of after your structured workout (ERG mode)?. Was it after your structured workout? In other words - did it not transition you smoothly from the workout (ERG mode) to free ride (SIM mode)?

Hi @Shuji, the issue didn’t occur during my 30-20-10-GO! workout. It actually started when I joined the ‘Ascenders Team’s BIG BIRTHDAY BASH Ride,’ which is a group ride. Every time I shifted up, it would automatically drop to gear 1, causing me to spin out and lose pace with the peloton. Because of this, I decided to switch to a different workout. However, I then realised I could continue the ‘Ascenders Team’s BIG BIRTHDAY BASH Ride’ by turning off the controllers in Zwift. This allowed the system to automatically set my watts based on my FTP or the group’s target. Just to be clear, this was not a workout in ERG mode.

Hi Shuji

There were no obvious problems with the workout in ERG mode. Occasionally the intensity level reduced but that was possibly due to accidental touching of the gear change button.

Post completing the workout the Gear went immediately to 1 and any attempt to increase the gearing resulted in it immediately returning to 1. I was able to continue riding but was stuck in 1.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks
Peter

@Peter_Reilly_SCC
This the “when it happend” context I was after, thank you.

@Elliot107
Was it similar for you too? When you joined the group ride - was it after you were in ERG mode?

If you both experienced it after a transition from ERG mode back to SIM mode - would like to confirm that’s a common thread between you two…

@shooj No, here’s what happened:

  • I joined the group ride as my first session.
  • I noticed that whenever I shifted up, the gear would automatically shift back to gear 1.
  • To work around this, I switched to a workout in ERG mode.
  • After being in the workout for a few minutes, I realised I could switch off the controllers and rejoin the group ride, allowing it to automatically use ERG mode so I could still complete the ride.
  • I then rejoined and completed the group ride with the controllers off.

I also have a video showing the issue, but I can’t post links here.

Please spell out the DOT in the `xyz DOT com" of your video link.

Thanks for detailing your order of operations. This helps us to try to reproduce what you experienced.

FYI. I’d managed a Group Ride and a race with no issues prior to the problems post the workout in ERG mode.

Not for the first time when I turn on Zwift play either in game or on the start screen the gears keep changing up and down.
Bars are 2 weeks old.
I managed again to do a hard reset of the controllers beginning to get very annoying.
is their a update coming soon or is this a hardware issue if so Zwift need to send out some new bars asap?
I have also restarted Zwift and my windows laptop

Hi @Rob_H2
Virtual Shifting has a feature that detects what physical gearing you have on your bike, then it will start you in an easy-to-start 8th virtual gear. This happens after your avatar spawns into a world / route. It happens only once during your session.

Would like to ask for clarity: When you say “start screen,” do you mean the Home Screen where you choose an activity to do? There will be no gear indicator at that point. Are you saying that you’re pedalling and the resistance is either too hard or too easy? This expected - the real gear detection hasn’t kicked in yet.

What happens after you select a route and your avatar spawns? Does the virtual gear indicator appear in the upper left of the display? Does it stay in the gear you choose, or does it change up and down on its own? That’s a whole different situation, and I’d like to clarify which of the two you’re talking about.

When I go to the pairing/home screen and turn on Zwift play the controllers start continually to vibrate as in gears are changing on their own.
I then chose a world route and click on it.

The gearing indicator is in gear 1 and goes up and down constantly and doesn’t start in gear 12 And I cant change Gear.
I did several hard resets and eventually the gearing switched off.
this has happened 3 times.
I’m using the latest firmware on Zwift play.
Kind regards Rob

Further update. I performed a hard reset to the controllers and was able to do a free ride with no issues. I followed this with an ERG controller Mend Recovery Workout. Once the workout end the gears continued to work properly. Attempted a further free ride with no issues.

Good to hear a hard reset solved it for you.

For those reading along - hard reset by holding down the Z button for 30 seconds. @Elliot107 would you also give that a try?

@Rob_H2
Welcome to the thread already under way. Since you have already hard reset the controller - please also confirm the shifter buttons are not physically jammed. One other possible reason a button my stay pressed is sweat ingress. If the shifters work as expected at first when they’re dry, then starts acting mid-ride after sweat may have seeped in - we recommend you ride with a gym towel draped over your handlebars. This is good practice because sweat will also get get under the bar tape and slowly corrode your handlebars.

If you’ve done these things and the shifter is stuck from the outset of a ride - please contact our Support colleagues to arrange an exchange of the handlebar / controllers. We can not arrange for returns or exchanges on this forum.

Its got nothing to do with sweat Shuji
the controllers are kept clean and i also where cycling gloves
it the problems persist i will be contacting support for a replacement.
the buttons work fine and not jammed!

I’ll give this a go tomorrow however I did a group workout yesterday and there was a free ride section in the workout. I was able to shift with the zwift ride controllers with no problems so I’m hoping the problem has been fixed automatically. I’ll confirm tomorrow after my ride. Thanks for the help in the forum!

The problem is back. This time it goes up and down the gears. Sometimes looses connection. I’ve tried all the previous fixes (hard reset, Bluetooth off & on, closed and restarted Zwift) but none of this helps. Getting frustrating now. Need a solution.

I had this same issue this morning just before a race. Just followed your advice here and it’s now working again! Thanks
