Could be overheating - an XPS is an ultrabook. It’s not going to have the best thermals.
The Intel GPU is not the bottleneck for these reasons:
- I have another laptop that has an older intel GPU (UHD Graphics 620) and it never crashes.
- dropping the resolution down 480p does not reduce the chances of crashing
- GPU usage is not pegged at 100% (and thermals are below 65c without throttling)
- An underperforming GPU is not going to be rendering at ~50fps 99% of the time.
- The Game was not crashing prior to the June 2020 update.
I have done OpenGL(ES) Development and can sympathize that Intel is the hardest out of the GPUs vendors to develop against, but its not impossible.
I’ve moved on to another product, but just wanted to say that from what I observe as a software developer, it is 100% something the Zwift developers can fix, but I completely understand if its not worth the resources to fix since few people uses Intel 10xxx iGPU.
Thanks for your comments, it is always good to hear an opinion (and arguments) from people who know more than I do.
Is the game crashing in all Zwift worlds? I had never crashes, with one exception - “playing” with ultra config and riding in France… After going back to Zwift config everything without issues.
It has crashed on me on all worlds and various routes. Also, everytime it crashes, the fit file gets corrupted (which implies to me the thread managing fit files are also deadlocked/terminated. ) and I’ve had to manually repair the files before manually uploading them to my connected apps (strava, etc.)
So, at this point I have no chance to use zwift on my brand new computer ? Is that serious ?
I use LG gram and have same issue. Did you fix it?
I sent my ‘event viewer’ file to zwift support team and no response yet.
I am having same problem. Zwift will randomly freeze during ride or race.
I am using win10 with all updates.
Some heads up… I’ll give you the final answer if I can finally resolve my problem.
It looks like my cpu is over heating only with zwift! I’ll keep you in touch if I can resolve the issue. Keep in mind the computer is brand new and I tried two LG gram ! Same issue !
I wonder if this issue is only happening with newer laptops. My old Surface Pro 3 ran fine but my new Dell XPS 9300 keeps having this issue.
anyone know if this Microsoft article to increase GPU processing time would help?
Method 2: Increase the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) processing time
Timeout Detection and Recovery is a Windows feature that can detect when video adapter hardware or a driver on your PC has taken longer than expected to complete an operation.
Giving the Timeout Detection and Recovery feature more time to complete this operation by adjusting the registry value, may resolve this issue.

I did not tried that but zwift support told me they have alot of problem with Intel product. I’m out of luck and waiting for more help from zwift.
It keep crashing at lower temperature also but I see alot of CPU throttling for no apparent reason.
My LG gram fit your Dell XPS 9300 spec. (CPU and GPU and RAM)
An update for iris gpu is on the way from zwift.
Thanks Olivier. An update for reliability/bug fix? Is it for Iris Xe as well as Iris Plus?
Here a copy of the message I received yesterday.
You should also be advised that our team is currently working on a fix for Zwift app crashes related specifically to various integrated GPUs like yours.
While there isn’t an official work-around for this issue as of yet, the fix will come from our end and all you should have to do is keep your Zwift app up to date.
Thank you for sharing Oliver! that is great news. I was ready to give up after having Tour de Zwift crash 3 times mid ride. Happy to hear that they are working on a fix!
Here the patch we are waiting for… maybe
Remove the space
Not yet !
Are you saying it’s arrived but didn’t work, or it hasn’t arrived?
I suppose this is one of the fixe to make it run better but this isn’t the patch we are waiting for our hardware. Maybe the next one ? See msg below.
Interestingly, I had been having crashes about every other ride for a while on my 11th gen i5 with Iris Xe.
Before this update, I updated the intel graphics driver to the January 4 version (27.20.100.9126). I also simultaneously made a few other changes (bad for debugging, but I was desperate to get zwift working reliably again): I switched all my sensors to Ant+ instead of a few on BT. I elevated my laptop to provide more cooling underneath.
Four rides since with no crashes. So it is possible that the January intel driver fixed some or all of the problem for me. Has anyone had crashes with the intel graphics driver error, who has upgraded to the January 4 driver?
Josh
Hi Josh.
i7, Iris plus,
New Intel driver and all my equipment are ant+.
I had some ice block under the computer, (casing was very very cold)
The issue occor at high temp (80-90f) or at lower temp (70-75f on all 4 core)
Time will tell but for me, it didn’t work.
I’m always watching my core temp and it’s throttling a bit but not that much.
