[Virtual Shifting] Elite Rivo Cog & Click

Hello!
Some time ago a friend of mine purchased the Elite Rivo with Cog and Click v2. Up until now everything was working fine — virtual shifting worked perfectly. The only issue was connecting laptop to the Click controllers. Because of that, we have installed the Zwift app on her phone. The controllers connected instantly, but then a problem with virtual shifting appeared. The resistance is very low! Let’s be honest — in gear 24 it should be hard, but I’m riding in that gear at 100 cadence and barely generating just over 300 watts. Recalibrating the device didn’t help. I should add that everything works perfectly in ERG mode, but free riding is a complete disaster. I’m completely exhausted from trying and searching for a solution. Please help me to help!

Hi @Dam_Gr welcome to Zwift forums.

Shuij at Zwift HQ here. After you’ve paired the trainer + Click controllers - go to the game settings menu.
Look under the Hardware tab. You should see toggles for Virtual Shifting, Shift Style, and Gear Range.

Under the Gear Range - choose the Flat (53/39, 10-28). This is the virtual equivalent of putting bigger physical chainrings on your bike. Give that a try and see if that helps provide more resistance?

Thank you for the answer. Unfortunately, It seems that is not where the problem lies… maybe one of the Rivio users or someone using any Elite trainer has had a similar issue and managed to solve it?

What happened when you tried to use the laptop that made you switch to the phone? That might be solvable, or with the laptop you could try using the phone for pairing only: Using the Zwift Companion App as a Bridge

Many PC laptops have quite poor Bluetooth performance, and the usual fix is to disable the built-in Bluetooth adapter and install a USB dongle such as a TP-Link UB500.

I am aware of the Bluetooth issues on laptops, but cant use Companion App to pair all the stuff since the trainer needs to be connected via Bluetooth to make Clicks work! Believe me, I have tried! The only trainer that support WiFi for Clicks is Kickr Core 2 (other Wahoo trainers also without the support).

Yes you can use the Companion app for pairing the the trainer and Click controllers. Many people pair everything via the Companion app (especially Apple TV users).

Well, now I am really confused! Because as soon as I connected the trainer and Clicks via the Companion app, a message popped up saying that the trainer does not support virtual shifting (even though moving through menu on the screen using the controllers was working).

Can you double check that the trainer paired via Bluetooth and not WiFi? Elite hasn’t released firmware that allows virtual shifting when paired via WiFi, so that’s a potential cause of that message.

When we connect Clicks in the Zwift app on the phone, everything connects via Bluetooth - gear changes are visible on the screen, but this is where the issue of low resistance across all gears appears. In the case of Zwift Companion, the connection seems to be default via WiFi, or at least it expects the phone and the laptop to be on the same network at the time of pairing. Then the problem appears regarding the trainer’s supposed support for virtual shifting. The same message appears when the laptop is connected directly to the trainer via WiFi without using Companion. I’m not sure whether it’s possible to change the connection method in Companion in any way

You could probably disable WiFi on the trainer so it never appears that way.

Can you post a screenshot of the pairing screen when you are using the Companion app on the phone for pairing? Also you must be absolutely certain that the Zwift app is no longer running on the phone when you are trying to pair via the Companion app.

But personally I would be trying to make Bluetooth work on the laptop by replacing the adapter. I don’t have an explanation for why it does not work properly when running Zwift on the phone.

Ill ask my a friend tomorrow to take a photo of the screen showing the Companion app during the connection process, but I don’t think we will find a solution there. I really struggled today trying to figure this out. Maybe that external Bluetooth module would be a solution. But at the moment what worries me most is the low resistance… even though ERG mode is working properly. I’ve contacted Elite because I honestly have no idea what else to do.

Contacting Elite is a good step, and I’m looking forward to any update you provide :+1:

Elite can tell you how to make sure the trainer is not connected to WiFi if you need that explanation.

As soon as I find a solution, I’ll post it here! I have found too many similar threads online, but none with a specific solution. I hope I’ll be able to fix the problem and help others who run into similar trouble.

By the way, the Elite app is really poor.

This is probably the closest match

Thank you! Unfortunately, there’s no mention of low resistance during the use of virtual shifting, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
