Virtual shifting not working on Elite Justo over wifi

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone in the community can help clarify or troubleshoot an issue I’m seeing with my Elite Justo when using Zwift virtual shifting with Zwift Click.

Setup

  • Trainer: Elite Justo 1 (& Elite Gateway)

  • Virtual shifting: Zwift Click v2 (& Cog)

  • Platform: Apple TV app

  • Connection methods tested between Zwift app and Justo trainer:

    • Bluetooth

    • Wi‑Fi with Elite Gateway (network dongle since Justo 1 does not have wifi built in)

Issue Description

Virtual shifting with Zwift Click and Cog only works correctly when the Justo is connected to Zwift via Bluetooth.

When I connect the Justo to Zwift over Wi‑Fi, the trainer pairs and works normally for power, ERG, and resistance, but virtual shifting does not function when ERG mode turned off. Zwift Click inputs are recognized, and can be used to navigate the zwift app, but virtual gearing does not work. Zwift app tells me my trainer does not support Virtual shifting. (Then why does it work over bluetooth???)

Thank you for any assistance.

Elite does not yet support virtual shifting when paired via WiFi. Bluetooth is the only option right now. They would have to ship another firmware update to make WiFi pairing possible. If you are trying to minimize the number of Bluetooth connections to Apple TV, the trainer does support HRM bridging.

Hi @Jim_Oestman, welcome to the Forums! I’m Francisco from Zwift Support.

What you’re seeing is expected behavior at the moment. Elite trainers like the Justo can connect to Zwift over Wi‑Fi for power, ERG, and resistance control, but Virtual Shifting isn’t supported over Wi‑Fi. That’s why you’re able to shift virtually when paired via Bluetooth, but not when paired through the Elite Gateway.

We’ve documented this issue here: Can’t Access Virtual Shifting Known Issue.

To use Virtual Shifting with your Elite trainer, please connect via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) directly to Zwift, or use the Zwift Companion app as a bridge.

Thanks for flagging this.

Ride On.

This is because Elite fraudulently advertises wifi without specifying that it does not work with Virtual Shifting. After so many months passing it appears unlikely they can make it work. I would have returned my Justo 2 had I known this sooner. I won’t buy another Elite product.

Is there any trainer that supports virtual shifting over wifi? I believe Zwift only supports virtual shifting over bluetooth.

Sure, the Wahoo Kickr V6, Kickr MOVE, Kickr Core 2, and the Jetblack Victory.

Sure, the trainer itself can connect via wifi, and nowadays many can. However, the controllers that you interact with to change gears requires a bluetooth connection. The pundits do not make this clear at all. The expectation is that if there is a wifi connection then all will connect via wifi. The reality is If you want to use virtual shifting you are ALSO going to need to connect those controllers by bt.

The trainers I mentioned support virtual shifting when paired via WiFi. Elite trainers don’t (yet). You are correct that the Zwift controls are Bluetooth devices, though the Kickr Core 2 can bridge them via WiFi to your game device.

Awesome, that I did not know and now it makes sense. Thank you for clarifying and quick reply. Can Zwift pressure Elite for firmware update?

I doubt any of us will know when it’s coming until Elite makes an announcement. Zwift works closely with trainer manufacturers and I’m sure they’d prefer to not be answering support questions about why virtual shifting doesn’t work when the trainer is paired via WiFi. I was impressed that Elite was able to offer virtual shifting on a big list of trainers dating back to the original Direto, which took them something like 6 months to deliver (after the announcement) and it was a little behind the announced schedule but it did come. I’m not aware of any communication from Elite about virtual shifting support when using WiFi pairing but I wouldn’t expect to be told about that.

It’s possible that fixing this with Elite, then also makes the controllers of the Elite Square all workable within Zwift too, and that would compete with their own Ride bike.

The details of the protocol have already been shared with Elite. I don’t believe any conspiracy is at work here.

Hi Paul,

Just closing the loop. I emailed Elite and their response is below.

please take note that, at the moment, the Zwift Cog and Click combined with Elite trainers can be paired just via Bluetooth.
The wired connection is not supported.

Elite knows this is an issue; I hope a fix appears soon.

I do hope Elite is not using the same coders as Saris - still no virtual shifting on Saris trainers…
