Hi all - I’m creating separated thread for the resistance issue in Van Rysel D100 smart trainer, as Zwift Click connection issues with Van Rysel D100 - this thread was about Zwift Cog and Click integration with that trainer, but more and more comments were about other issue, with the same trainer, but with normal cassettes.
Discussion about this issue was also going on on subreddit r/zwift (sorry can’t use links, but you can search for it)
Issue Summary
The Van Rysel D100 smart trainer is experiencing resistance control problems in Zwift’s simulation mode.
Device Details
- Trainer Model: Van Rysel D100 (Standard version, not the new “Zwift Edition”)
- Current Firmware: 0.106 (from other threads it looks like this issue appeared with 0.104)
- Connection Type: Direct to Zwift, bluetooth + external cadence sensor
- Affected Mode: Simulation (SIM) mode only
Problem Description
The trainer fails to simulate resistance changes during free rides in Zwift. ERG mode for workouts functions normally, but SIM mode essentially provides no resistance, and no resistance changes.
Technical Analysis
Timing Correlation
The issue emerged approximately one month ago, coinciding with a software update that resolved Zwift Cog and Click compatibility issues. After that there was another software update for the trainer to 0.106 version, that hasn’t fixed the issue. Since then no updates
Behavior Pattern
- No resistance changes in Zwift’s simulation mode
- ERG mode functions correctly
- Resistance simulation works properly in other applications
Working Theory
The problem may be related to virtual shifting implementation. The consistently low resistance suggests the system might be defaulting to the highest virtual cog position. This could be due to Zwift treating the standard D100 and D100 Zwift edition as the same device.
Important Notes
- Users with the standard D100 should avoid updating to firmware version 0.106
- The issue appears to be a software interaction problem between Zwift and the trainer rather than hardware-related
- The problem affects only standard D100 units using regular cassettes
