Upcoming guarantued crashes at Alpe at next Tour de Zwift?

Next Tour de Zwift will feature the Tour of Fire and Ice Route during the January 14th til 16th Mountain Madness etappe.

This route will end at the Alpe du Zwift. But a long existing bug will crash all iOS and AppleTV devices when people will cross the finish line just before descending down the Alpe. So this will influence thousands of people. I presume this will lead to a lot of anger and frustration, because many members will not be able to finish their ride.

See Alpe du Zwift graphics glitch [December 2021] [SOLVED] and My Apple TV has hung for all complaints about this issue.

I think people need to be warned that they won’t be able to save their ride when they ride 1 km longer than the initial finish line.

@shooj @Mark_Cote This is a fairly big event. Will ATV users be able to complete this or should they not bother?

This issue has been around for months & months…

Hope the bug is fixed for the Tour of Zwift.
Did the Alpe yesterday and got the blue screen just before the descent.

People will vent a lot of anger if they get this glitch after a long and hard event.

As far as I know from reading the reports of this bug you can still save the activity using the companion app, so at least those who know that will be able to save and hopefully still get credit for the event.

You are entirely correct, Mike. Unfortunately, we all know that only a very small proportion of Zwift riders consult these Forums or will be aware of the issue, especially newer riders. Zwift should be doing all they can to make such marquee event experiences as friction-free as possible, but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that this issue is being addressed in earnest.

This reminds me of the communications and planning issues around the 2021 Road Academy, which could also have been avoided with a little more care, and were only patched up well into the series after lots of embarrassing criticism, e.g., laconic comms about the base ride structure; poor placement of starts/ends of sections and the arches that were moved; required recovery rides 1 and 2 not being listed as such in Events, leading to confusion about the rides people should be doing to complete those, etc.

Before I’m accused of doom-mongering, I will be truly happy to be proven wrong in my predictions if all goes smoothly this weekend on stage 2.

Am following up on this bug with the Zwift team.

I rode up and down the Alpe this weekend using ATV, but we know it worked because it wasn’t a group event.

Is it possible to avoid the crashing by crossing the banner at the top and doing a U turn vs going around the circle at the top or does it shutdown regardless?

That’s a good question, @_Ellie.
All of my Alpe ascents have been done as free rides (iPad Pro, no glitches/crashes). Perhaps someone who has had glitches in Alpe events and has tried both possibilities is out there?

Shuji has noted elsewhere this evening that a patch is being worked on for this issue, which they hope to apply before the Stage 2 rides start.

I’ll be doing the TdZ Alpe this weekend.
If there are problems for ATV and iPad users doing the TdZ route, we’ll probably hear about it in these Forums well before the weekend!

This is from another thread on the whole AdZ issue:

I don’t think u turns are permitted at the top of the Alpe.
I think I tried once to no effect.
I’ll have to go back and try now.

the only possibility at the moment is to exit the event just after the finish line and doind the descent as free ride outside the event. the glitch should not happen…

No way they would plan a major stage event knowing the road might be out!
The UCI would never approve. I hope the repair is done in time, if not this event should make them more aware. This crash has been going on for over a year.

I have had a few Alpe climbs recently without the normal crash on the top circle. The only thing different was I selected the Watopia world first. Normally I would just let the default world load prior to the race and then have the software transfer me over when my event was starting.

This has worked 3 times I think but not sure if it was pre selecting the world or just luck.
Prior to that I had many Alpe crashes on the top loop after going thru the banner, usually when the “camera” view pans out to the overhead view looking down on the rider.

Good luck to all. If the road goes out again you won’t be alone at the coffee shop.

I did this twice yesterday because there is no need to do the extra loop at the end, that’s just needless kilometres. I had no issues doing the U-turn.

We have fixed this for the Stage 2 TdZ events and will have a client fix for all events utilizing the l’Alpe in an upcoming patch, planned for next week.

Thank you for highlighting. This was due to a bug in how some Apple devices recalculated the visuals of the descent once doing the loop at the top of the l’Alpe.

Yet people are reporting crashes at top of ADZ on stage 2. I dont understand why a known bug allowed to stay unpatched this long and to remain for TDZ course. Why not use Ven Top instead for long route if it couldnt be fixed.

Sorry first time doing tour and didn’t read this first. Zwift just crashed out after I completed stage 2. Can you assist?

Thx,
Jay Ladieu

See above, Zwift will solve the issue in the update next week.

You know, when Stage 2 is finished… Hard not to be sarcastic…

Cheers, didn’t fully catch the fix after the stage is complete.

I’m understanding this to say they have only fixed the TdZ events on the alpe for now, and will fix all other events that use the alpe next week… however, sounds like it wasn’t fixed for stage 2 anyway?
