And again: Need more baseline resistance even for 34-10 gearing… I have a Elite Direto X - any hints how to achieve the same as the Kickr folks?
To add to this: I changed the wheel circumfence in the Elite app from 2250 to 3000 - guess this does not help as even my 11 year old daugther is maxing out with her 28:10 even at her age (with 95+ cadence). We are really feeling and graining down the small cogs…
@Hugues@Daniel_Mckenna what values are you providing into the app ?
If i enter something bigger than 2.75 i’v got a warning that max value can be only 2.75m …
2.75 is the max for me as well. I see someone mentioned 3 further up the thread but I guess they have tightened the limit in the latest versions for whatever reason.
This is still more than enough for my setup. Even on my mountain bike the fastest gear is a real struggle now. Before I changed the wheel circumference it was only getting 114W @ 90RPM in the same gear!
I played about with this some more tonight and noticed that the base resistance didn’t seem to change when I altered the wheel circumference from 2.75 to 2.0. So it doesn’t seem like its a simple linear scale. However, the first time I set it to 2.75 (i am not sure what the default value was) it has a huge impact.
Alot of the workarounds posted about this issue is about using a app on a phone/tablet to influence the trainer resistance. This seems like it actually breaks the Zwift code of conduct:
"
Attempting to use, showing others how to use, or colluding with another person who is using, any
method to gain an unfair advantage, such as:
o Use of mechanical or electronic devices that provide an unfair advantage, such as motors,
devices that alter equipment signals, devices that control the smart trainer resistance, devices
that broadcast simulated data or devices that interfere with broadcast data.
"
But changing the base resistance is in a way controlling the resistance, it depends on how this is interpreted by Zwift (which we will probably never know cause they won’t reply).
You can have a 29 MTB or a 26 MTB, they will both have different base resistance. Or you can change your chainring… at the end of the day it doesn’t change the number of watt you produce, it just change the gear ratio.
“Use of mechanical or electronic devices that control the smart trainer resistance”. I don’t think they refer to the manufacturer app as an “mechanical or electronic devices”.
“I don’t think they refer to the manufacturer app as an “mechanical or electronic devices”.”
maybe your right, but they way it is worded we cannot know for sure.
I just got a reply from Zwift and they said letting your phone control the resistance in the trainer is a good solution for the problem that the baseline resistance may otherwise be too low. The only exceptions are races that explicitly state that you are required to let Zwift control the trainer (with a trainer difficulty above a certain value) and these are rare.
@Viktor It’s like you are trying really hard to piss on people party here. Not sure what your goal was, to scare people away from using that technique or to get some people banned as you can see it failed. It’s not because you don’t understand something that it somehow makes it against the rules. You can ask questions, that’s why the community is here, but that’s not what you elected to do.
Just to reclarify so your last reply doesn’t bring confusion for others reading this thread, by setting your wheel size, you are not letting your phone control the resistance, Zwift will still have 100% control over it. You will simply change how the trainer set the base resistance and Zwift will take it from there. You don’t even need to let the Wahoo app open, it’s part of the normal process to set the wheel size when you set up the trainer with any bike. You basically only need to set that once and you are good to go. I personally use Zwift at 100% difficulty and it works really good (including in races). Changing the base resistance by changing the wheel size won’t change your in-game performance (number of watts produced). Same as if you were to change your gears ratio on your bike.
Did you actually read what I wrote or did you just feel like being angry on the internet? In my first post I pointed out that some of the solutions suggested here may break the CoC depending on how it is interpreted by Zwift. I contacted Zwift and asked them if letting your phone control the trainer resistance when you are riding would in fact break the CoC and they basically said “No, this is allowed and a good solution to your problem.”. My last post was to let people know this. Wether you consider what you suggested is ok or not is completely irrelevant.
I’m having this issue too. How did you know which size to change it to? Or did you just guess and check? I suppose I’ll never really know if it’s accurate enough?
@Seth_Harris I have a 32T in the front and I set it up to 3m wheel size and the ratio is good for me. But @Robert_Kaluza was reporting that he can’t go above 2.75m. But yeah, basically you can set that up in the wahoo app while riding in Zwift and you will feel the change in few seconds, so you can tune that according to your preference.
Thanks. Seems like such an unnecessary hack. I had a perfectly functioning kickr core until my 4 year old broke it (put a plastic bag in the wheel while i was riding) and now this new one they sent me has the problems. So I know it’s always necessary to do this. Annoying. thanks again.
Well, it should be unnecessary for most, this is mostly for people like me who have a mountain bike without the higher gear ratio that you will find on a road bike. I glad I found this hack, it saved me from having to buy a new bike.
I find it absolutely ridiculous that zwift refuses to address this. Nowhere in their support docs do they say anything about mountain bike gearing not being compatible with road riding. They have mountain bikes in their marketing materials! I would be upset if i dropped $700+ for a trainer to find out i cant ride with my friends on zwift because i dont have the right bike.
I have a CX bike with a 42x11 max and resolved the issue with changing my wheel size in my trainer’s setup software to 3000mm like others suggest. I have a feeling the actual max is smaller but whatever. I have an Elite Direto.
