ERG Mode NOT working after latest Update [1.41] [3.47] [June 2023] [SOLVED]

I realize it looks bad to see a “No Signal” warning, so please allow me to explain.

Devices can be “Connected” or “Disconnected”. That is the important point. You can see from your screenshot that all devices are “Connected” which means they are talking to Zwift. All that “No Signal” means is that Zwift hasn’t heard from the device in the last 5 seconds. That’s it.

I think you’ll find if you actually proceed with your activity everything will work (including Cadence and Heart Rate display in your case).

It might be worth getting a dedicated Bluetooth dongle and a extension cable to have that close to the trainer.

Hey @Diego_Torres1, I’ve remotely enabled a possible fix for your issue with ERG mode not working when connected to Zwift Companion Bluetooth bridge.

When it’s convenient for you, would you please try again your workout using ZC and report back as to whether ERG mode now functions correctly?

Hello.

Strangely enough, when my devices show “no signal”, I don’t get any data in the game. I thought this was normal since it has always been like that. I understood that for example my cadence sensor goes to sleep mode after not spinning the pedals, and that’s where the no signal comes from, but my HR monitor is a Tick fit, which reads all the time (does not have a sleep mode), so once connected it should never go to “no signal”.

Anyway, one more thing to worry, but that’s not the mail issue.

Hi. Computer is less than 1.5 mts away from the trainer and even less from the sensors. I do agree that having some sort of extension cable could improve connectivity, but they are not far away from each other.

And most importantly, it all connected perfectly before the update.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi.

It DID WORK!

It connected flawlessly and ERG mode connected just as before the update; no problem whatsoever. I then turned off everything (PC, sensors, cellphone, trainer, etc) and let it all rest for like 20 minutes. After that, I turned everything back on, and it worked again with no problem, ERG, connectivity, strength of signal, etc.

Three things:

  1. THANK YOU, for all your patience, effort, and assitance @Mike.W . You’ve been of great help.
  2. Could you let me know what you did? some other people in this forum and in FB groups may benefit from whatever you did.
  3. Please don’t mark this as “solved” yet, since I’m so traumatized, that I don’t trust devices will continue to connect. I’ll continue using it every day this week and report to you and everybody else in case something happens.

Thanks again,

Very happy to hear this change has resolved your issue (so far) @Diego_Torres1, and thank you so much for your patience, understanding, and willingness to test out this change even when my previous attempt failed.

I can confirm we will begin rolling out this fix starting tomorrow morning (6/7) and by Friday, if all goes well, it will be live for all users. The fix was actually made awhile ago, but it is imperative we test changes before releasing them to avoid creating yet more issues (as you will see further below).

And yes, we will leave this forum thread open for two more days to collect reports on whether you continue to have ERG functioning correctly and ensure things have gotten better for everyone or to see if there were any new issues introduced by this change. Personally, I’m looking forward to it getting marked as solved!

WARNING
That said, there is a new issue we discovered earlier today while testing this fix: Relaunching ZC on the Paired Devices screen will not work properly. After ZC is restarted, Bluetooth exercise devices will not appear. The workaround, if you need to relaunch ZC for some reason, is to leave the Paired Devices screen and then return.

This is obviously not a good user experience (and obviously unintentional), but because the new change appears (so far) to fix some connection issues with Android Zwift Companion, and because the “Relaunch ZC” scenario is somewhat unlikely, and because it has a workaround, we are moving forward with the rollout of this fix, and work is being done to address the “ZC relaunch” issue for a future release.

It is possible there could be other yet undiscovered issues that may emerge from this fix, and if they break people we may have to pull back on the rollout. In such a scenario, we will still be able to enable the fix for those specific users (like you) who would benefit until it is safe to roll out to all users.

Hardware: PC Win 10 desktop, Samsung S23, Jetblack Volt v2, Garmin HRM Pro (yellow one).

Zwift is running on the Win 10 box, Z. Companion on my S23, using Bluetooth. ERG mode has stopped working, and it was fine up until a week ago. Whether I’m riding solo, in a workout or a group event, Zwift won’t alter the trainer’s resistance.

During troubleshooting, the Volt talks to the Jetblack App and will respond to increased resistance, but even if I restart the trainer, PC, and phone (or even try a different phone, both an A72 and old Huawei) I still get the same problem. I’ve tried running the heart rate through the Garmin, and through the Volt, in case the phone didn’t like having to deal with two signals, but in the past this hasn’t been an issue. I’ve also been able to use a ANT+ HRM with a USB dongle in the Win 10 machine, and the power/controllable unit/cadence through the companion app.

Any ideas? Again, the Jetblack works as intended through its native app.

I posted before I found this thread.

My Win 10 desktop doesn’t have Bluetooth built in, but a USB dongle or PCIe card is pretty cheap so I’ll try that.

Exactly the same problem, tied all of the above without success. ERG is on but not functioning!

Hi @Mike_Chopping5711 I have added you to the list of users getting the potential fix. When it’s convenient, would you please try again and let us know if the issue is resolved?

Hi @TayTay I’m working to add you to the list of users to receive the potential fix. I will update once you are good to go.

Ive had the same problem too. ERG not working on BT campanion bridge. BT through Windows laptop is never very stable. Would be great to be added to the fix list.

Hi @Susan_Bonnar, you didn’t mention it, but the potential fix being rolled out to all users mainly enhances connectivity with Zwift Companion on Android. I’ve assumed since you are having issues that this is probably the case and have added you to the list of users to have the potential fix enabled.

Please do reply when you have a chance to try using ERG mode with Zwift Companion to let us know if this fix worked for you (or not). Also please be mindful of this new issue discovered when this fix is active, mentioned in a previous post.

It worked. I’ve tried couple custom workout sessions without problems. The BT link to my Kickr was made as paired straight away and ERG worked properly during my workout. Huge thanks for getting onto this so promptly. Thanks also to Diego for working with you.

@Mike.W … I too are having ERG mode issues using ZC with a Windows PC tablet. Can I please be added to the trial fix user list.

Also what is the likely ETA for a fix to be rolled out?

Thank you Mike! It worked, but with one problem that might not be related.

Followed your steps, and chose a HIIT session, and all went well. Used my Samsung S23, with the Garmin Pro HRM through the Jetblack Volt. Happy days.

This is where the new problem comes in. I quit the HIIT, left the trainer and went to a different room. When I came back, the HRM had lost connection with the Volt. Repaired but directly to ZC, not through the Volt. without quitting Zwift. At this point, the Volt is on ZC controlling the speed, cadence and controllable, and the Garmin is on its own. Started a new group ride, and the ERG/resistance wasn’t working.

I’m about to shut everything down and try a new ride without deleting the .xml file, and if that doesn’t work I’ll restart and follow your steps again.

Appreciate your efforts so far.

EDIT: restarted the Volt, Zwift and put the S23 into airplane mode to ‘flush’ the BT connection. repaired on ZC with the Garmin HRM as a separate connection, and all went well in a ERG workout and group ride, which is great.

@Lee_Johnson_ADFCC a fix was fully rolled out last week to 100% of all users (so you have already been included). The fix addresses issues noted when connecting devices through the Android version of Zwift Companion.

If you are using the Android version of Companion with your Windows PC tablet, please let me know if are still experiencing your issue after starting a new session.

Hello,

As promised, I kept using the app since last Wed June 7th when @Mike_22W kindly assisted me and pushed the fix to my ZC App. Results are as follow:

Wednesday: The ZC App did NOT recognize the ERG on Wed morning. I moved to PC BT and it worked, fine. I worked out and it was ok. Later on that day, I tried again (after turning everything off, trainer, ZC App, game, etc). and it did connect and ERG worked fine. I didn´t do much. Pretty much when it didn´t work in PC BT, I moved to the App and when it didn´t work on App I moved to PC BT up until it worked one way or the other.

Thursday: It connected flawlessly with the ZC App. All worked fine, workout done!

Friday: It connected flawlessly with the ZC App. All worked fine, workout done!

Saturday: Rest day. Didn´t do much; all stayed disconnected.

Sunday: It connected flawlessly with the ZCApp. All worked fine, workout done!

Monday (today): It all connected perfect with the ZC App. In the middle of a workout, I needed to go to the restroom, so I paused thru the app, and did my business. When I came back like 5 minutes later, I resumed the game, all worked fine but NO ERG. I panicked, pedaled some more KM to see if it was asleep, not success. I finished the workout and ERG never kicked in. I exit the game, exit ZC App, restarted everything, entered the game, used the App, and ERG was back online. So I have no idea, but when my devices go to sleep mode, they just loose connection. Same thing happens with the cadence sensor; it says “connected” but never registers the cadence, no matter how much I pedal.

But anyway. I guess all I need to do is plan my bathroom breaks accordingly, and I should not have any problems. Bottom line, I´ve been able to work out this last 6 days, and that makes me happy.

Thanks again for all your support and assistance.
