Cadence issues on iPad

I have been using Zwift for the past six months on an iPad with no issues. However, in the past week cadence has been showing as zero. I’m using a Wahoo Kicker Snap and a Garmin cadence sensor on my crank. As you can see from this screenshot, the sensor is connected, but does not move off of zero. Everything else works as normal.

I’ve changed the battery on the sensor, uninstalled and reinstalled Zwift on the iPad, rebooted the iPad, turned Bluetooth off and on, and performed a calibration, but the cadence still does not move, although it shows as connected. If I turn on my Garmin Edge, it shows the cadence properly, so I know the sensor is working.

Just to make sure that there has been no interference from other devices, I’ve turned off my Garmin and iPhone, but no luck. Keep in mind that I’ve been able to use Zwift fine for the past six months without having to worry about other devices interfering.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @John_Moreland1, welcome to the forums! Thanks for bringing this query to our attention! Jose here from Zwift.

It sounds like you’ve done a thorough job troubleshooting the issue, great effort! Since your Garmin cadence sensor is connecting but still showing zero in Zwift, here are a few additional steps to try:

  1. Forget & Re-Pair the Sensor
  2. In Zwift, go to the Paired Devices screen.
  3. Select your cadence sensor, then forget/unpair it.
  4. Restart Zwift and re-pair the sensor.
  5. Check Bluetooth vs. ANT+

Zwift on iPad only supports Bluetooth, while your Garmin Edge may be using ANT+.
If your sensor supports both, ensure it’s broadcasting Bluetooth and not just ANT+.

Try a Different Device, If possible, test Zwift on another device (like a PC or phone) to see if the issue persists. If it works elsewhere, the problem may be specific to the iPad.

Reset the Sensor
Remove the battery again, but this time flip it upside down for 10 seconds before reinstalling. This can help reset the sensor’s internal memory.

Check for Firmware Updates
Use the Garmin Connect app to check if your cadence sensor has a firmware update available.

Have a lovely day!

Hi @John_Moreland1

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Jose has good foundational things to try to troubleshoot.
Also - when’s the last time you power cycled your iPad? Not just the usual put it sleep-and-wake-it-up. A hard restart is different. Here’s how.

I’m looking at your server logs and see that you’ve tried logging into Zwift from an iMac. Did that clear up the cadence sensor issue?

Also - don’t drive yourself crazy troubleshooting on both the iPad + iMac. This creates a situation where you might be logged in from two computers at the same time, and this creates its own set of problems. I’d recommend uninstalling Zwift app from the iMac to eliminate the risk of concurrent logins.
