Zwift Hub / Companion App / MacBook Pro Question

This is a silly question, but I’m trying to troubleshoot a connection issue with my current setup.

I have the Zwift App on my MacBook Pro, I use the Companion App on my phone that pulls in the Hub and my watch HR sensor.

I’ve been having an issue where the bluetooth connection drops. I am usually in workout mode. On the Mac, the screen is showing 0 watts, the Companion App stops showing the workout and defaults to the home page of the app.

When this happens, the bluetooth connection on the Mac can’t find anything. My companion app settings is still able to connect to the Zwift Hub hardware. I’m guessing the bluetooth connection on the Macbook is the problem?

If I were to get a dongle, I should move it closer to my phone and connect to the Zwift app on my macbook via “pair to phone”, or should I move the dongle closer to the hub and pair using the Hub? Just want to make sure I understand how the Hub/Companion App/Macbook Zwift app all communicate.

Hi @Jordan_Walter, I believe when connecting through the companion app it is actually using wifi between the phone and the MacBook, not bluetooth. It sounds like you are having wifi signal issues, perhaps just rebooting the wifi equipment will help?

Alternatively, you can get a bluetooth dongle and a USB extention cable so that it sits as close to your trainer as possible, and then not have to use the companion app to bridge the signal at all. This is likely a better and more stable setup.

Hi @Jordan_Walter, thank you for posting! I’m Gian from Zwift.

Sorry to hear that you’ve been experiencing disconnections. Mike is right here, your devices connect to the Zwift Companion app over Bluetooth, and then it passes along the data to the Zwift app on your Mac via Wi-Fi. Please try the following:

  1. Reboot your Wi-Fi router.
  2. Turn off mobile data on your phone, so it only uses Wi-Fi when you Zwift.

You can also use a Bluetooth dongle (or your Mac’s built-in Bluetooth) to connect your devices without the Zwift Companion app by selecting “Pair with Bluetooth” on the pairing screen.

If the issue with the Zwift Companion app persists, or you’re unable to connect using only your Mac’s Bluetooth, I recommend that you get in touch with us. We’ll be happy to continue assisting you.

Thank you! I didn’t understand that wifi was involved. Thanks for clarifying this. I’ll try the dongle and extension cable and not use the companion app as a bridge.

Ok, I remember now why I use the Companion App.

I tried using bluetooth last week from my Zwift Hub and it works fine, but Zwift on my computer isn’t picking up my Coros watch HR sensor too. I think I used the Companion app wifi connection because it bundles my Zwift Hub and Coros HR together, but my computer bluetooth can’t pick up my Zwift hub and Coros HR separately.

Is there a reason why my MacOS Zwift app can’t take two bluetooth connections?
