Wahoo too hard to pedal

I have very recently purchased Wahoo Core with the Zwift training.
All has been working perfectly until the near end to a ride when the resistance changed and I couldn’t turn the pedals!
Now, the bike pedals turn normally on the core until i connect with power and once again the pedals become ‘stuck’ and too hard to turn.
Connection to Zwift seems to take a little longer than before this issue but all connects but unable to undertake a ride.
Frustrating dealing with the AI response from Zwift and still waiting a reply from Wahoo.
Has anyone experienced this and recommend a solution?
Thanks

is this during a workout with ERG enabled? sounds like the death spiral.

Hi @Mark_Emmett welcome to Zwift forums.

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. I am also curious if this occurred during a structured workout where you were using ERG mode?

I scanned your recent server log history and noticed your Functional Threshold Power number has been increasing slowly since early October of this year, FTP is a proxy for your fitness, so congratulations!

On November 2, your FTP was 153. On November 4, it jumped to 179 - a pretty steep increase that might account for an ERG mode workout feeling “too hard to pedal” at the outset. You might want to manually set that back to the old number, and see if that feels more appropriate for your current level of fitness. Here’s how.

Structured workout intervals give you wattage targets that are a percentage of your FTP. The stronger your are, the higher those targets are set. It’s therefore important to take an FTP test that will accurately measure your current fitness level. The tests are designed so you give a maximal effort over a certain time interval. I’d recommend The Grade - it’s the most fun one IMO.

Side note: your KICKR Core is on an outdated firmware version 1.3.17, You should update that using the Wahoo app. Here’s how

Shuji, Thanks for your reply
I have followed your instructions:
Reset my ERG to a lower number, and
updated the Firmware.
Unfortunately, the issue has not changed.
Power off, pedals turn. Power connected very hard to turn.
I am new to using Zwift so not sure whether I was in ERG or not. I simply chose the Ride to Sky and continued to ride uphill to within a mile of the end when the resistance suddenly became too hard to pedal, I came to a standstill and couldn’t get started again. Stopped ride and was notified that my ERG had increased.
The Wahoo App will not down load on my Apple Mac or My Samsung phone, so downloaded on my wife’s Apple Phone but other than opening it to update the firmware didn’t use it for all previous rides.
It feels that the power is looking the wheel.
Have you any further suggestions?
Thank you once again

Mark

Open the wahoo app, make sure Zwift is off/closed, and perform a “spindown” calibration. Then close Wahoo app, make sure the trainer is disconnected. Open Zwift and give it a try. Hope that helps.

Mike
Thank you, I actually tried this previously and followed your instructions once again without success.
As soon as I connect the power to the Wahoo it is very difficult to turn the pedals. Literally have to use all my body weight to push down and pull up.
Connecting the power locks up the Wahoo.
Disconnect the power and pedal action returns to normal.
Thanks once again
Mark

Hi @Mark_Emmett

Not sure why Wahoo’s app is giving you problems, but it’s really important to update the KICKR Core firmware. As of your your last ride (Nov 5), the firmware is still on v1.3.17.

Subsequent firmware updates have addressed known issues with their automatic spindown calibration, which I suspect will fix your resistance-is-too-high issues.

Not sure why the Wahoo app wouldn’t install on your Samsung, but it should work just fine on your wife’s iPhone. If not - you may want to contact Wahoo support to ask for their help. There’s a link on the bottom of the page for firmware update instructions.

I have successfully downloaded the Wahoo App on my phone and updated the firmware to the latest version.
I tried to do a spin down, but as soon as I connect the power, I cannot turn the pedals.

I have been informed to delete the Zwift App from my Mac and use the Wahoo App to test.
If I delete the Zwift App, I assume I can reinstall it and my membership will not be affected?
Personally, I don’t think a test using the Wahoo App will make any difference as the route of the issue is when the Wahoo is connected to power if locks up. Can Zwift software cause this issue even if the App is not connected?

Ir seems that neither Swift or Wahoo have had this issue before

Thanks Again Mark

@Mark_Emmett

Correct. Your account and subscription will be unaffected, but your in-game settings will need to be reset to your preference.

Please follow these instructions for the most thorough deletion of all Zwift-related files.

If you get the same results using the Wahoo app - it’s most likely a fault with the trainer itself. If you find that’s the case, please reach out to to Wahoo support for next steps.

Shuji
Followed your instructions and using Wahoo App still unable to turn pedals.
Taken the issue up with Wahoo when issue first occurred and followed up. Unfortunately, their customer service is not as responsive as Zwift.
I’ll let you know when I hear back from them
