I would guess so, although this bug has been there for some time. If this just recently happened then it might be something else.
First post here and almost into 2 months of using zwift +saris H3.
I updated to latest firmware on saris, latest app on apple tv.
When using H3’s BT to appleTV, it seems the lag is almost gone.
However, when using through ipad/iphone’s companion app BT, there’s almost no resistance or super strong resistance when it shouldn’t.
I am using separate cadence and HR monitor so using companion app is a big plus.
When using CABLE device, it works flawlessly.
But when battery in CABLE dies in the middle of workout or race is no fun.
Would be great if all works smoothly with BT through companion app.
Keep up the good work Saris and Zwift team.
Hope you all stay safe.
I haven’t ventured back to Bluetooth for my H3 instead sticking with Ant+ dongle. This means using my MacBook Pro instead of the ATV. Have you tried connecting the H3 to the ATV with nothing else sending signal. After the H3 is connected then starting the companion app and allowing the other devices to connect.
Hadn’t heard about the Cable. I see it listed at Amazon and will take a look at it.
I have the same problem. Erg mode for workouts:I just spin out completely. Pointless. Saris h3, all updates loaded, iPad Pro. Obviously linked via Bluetooth.
I use Apple Watch for heart monitor and the companion app.
I’m new to the smart trainer scene so not sure what I,m doing wrong or if I have a faulty H3?
Will it solve issue if I get ant+ dongle for iPad?
Thanks in advance.
Update. I tried an ant+ dongle from amazon with i pad pro 2018 via an adapter and it picks up no signals at all.
ERG mode works fine on Rouvy…
I’ll try some additional set ups…no heart rate monitor or companion app perhaps ?
These are all bluetooth so maybe it’s overloading it with info…??
Very confusing and annoying as workouts are currently useless.
Make sure the trainer is not connected to any other device or app. BlueTooth can only connect to one thing, if it is connected to any other app or device it wont be able to talk to Zwift.
Go on all your devices and forget/disable the trainer in bluetooth settings.
Hi. The trainer is only connected to my iPad.
Works fine in watopia and connects ok.
The main issue is erg mode. It simply won’t work correctly.
I’m still having the same problems described here. I see an old not from Zwift stating that an upgrade last May should have fixed it, but no luck. Any news here? Exceptionally frustrating!
Thans.
Me too I am running H3 via blue tooth into new iPad Air . Erg mode is completely out of sync with any training program and Resistance does not change properly inline with gradient when riding in normal mode. Works fine on Rouvy and Sufferfest
Saris H3 + ATV with all problems described above.
Saris firmware/software is the latest (31.062/37.013|009b|00001). Spindown calibration works with the Saris app.
ATV app is the latest - and has been uninstalled/reinstalled many times.
- Devices (H3 + Polar HR) paired bluetooth to ATV: calibration doesn’t finish and cadence lags or is completely out to lunch. ERG mode resistance changes lag. Free ride resistance changes in relation to gradient lag or sometimes are way off.
- Bluetooth disabled on ATV and devices (H3+Garmin cadence+Polar HR) paired bluetooth to Companion app: cadence is perfect, but resistance in ERG mode or free ride are basically the opposite of what they should be - very heavy resistance on flats and declines; no resistance on inclines. Changes lag or seem random. Sometimes the problem clears itself after 5-15 miles.
The trainer difficulty setting in the Menu has no effect (however resistance feels fairly normal, albeit light, when the difficulty setting is at the default 50%).
When in use, the companion app and the ATV are both using wired ethernet out to the internet. Wireless has been completely removed.
My whole set-up with the H3 and Zwift on ATV worked perfectly in January. Spindown stopped working in March, and the cadence/resistance issues really began to present themselves with the big app updates in April/May. Whatever was supposed to be fixed in May actually made things worse.
My choices seem to be:
- pair devices bluetooth to ATV and deal with lags/non-responsive cadence and resistance;
- pair devices bluetooth to companion app and have great cadence but non-existent/too much resistance;
- dump the ATV for another platform?
This seems to be a common problem for H3/ATV owners. Should I even bother opening a support case?
Follow up:
Platform 1 - Reinstalled Zwift app on ATV and paired the H3 for power/cadence/control and Polar HR (my two-device limit). Trainer difficulty: max. Used the companion app only for stops/starts/ride-ons. Took a five mile free ride in NYC. Result? Not too bad! Very little cadence lag and resistance mostly mirrored the terrain.
Platform 2 - Dragged an old laptop over by the tv, inserted an old Garmin ANT+ dongle, installed Zwift, paired the H3 power/control, Polar HR, Garmin cadence all to ANT+. Trainer difficulty: max. Used the companion app only for stops/starts/ride-ons. Viola! Instant Zwift! No cadence lag, no resistance issues over another five mile free ride in NYC.
Summary: pairing H3 to the companion app seems to be the real issue. Bluetooth with ATV is way better than it was, but ANT+ seems to be the way to go right now. I need to try both the laptop and ATV on a few group rides for comparison, but at least I have alternatives. I feel very much better about Zwift now.
yesterday doing nyc, resistance was all over the place. had enough. so i had to science the sh out of it .
my setup: Saris H3 , zwift app running on apple tv 4k, (wired lan). hdmi output to 4k 50”philips monitor. game sound via monitor. iphone x with companion app. wahoo hrm.
separate iphone with music via BT speaker and wifi. all firmwares updated
the approach is 2 ways,
1-measure BLE signal
So i nstalled the app homescan on my mobile
appstore: homescan-for-homekit
now i could measure signal strength between apple tv and saris h3. so i found out that the ble signal from the saris at the atv location was fair/weak and the ble signal from atv at the saris left side (where the circuit board is) was fair.
via saris and atv tear down vids i found out that the saris ble antenna is at the left side, and the atv ble antenna is at the top rear of the unit. the line of sight between atv and saris had the following obstacles:
-atv was located front right of bike
-the atv antenna at rear, it has to radiate via its own box with rlectronics
-myself on the bike
-the gear wheels on the saris right side
now i mounted the atv vertically on the wall left at 50cm from the saris left side.
signals now: good/excellent!
2-interference from other wireless
thing is that in my pain cave, several wireless protocols are competing for the 2.4Ghz band:
-Ble for saris control from zwift
-Ant+ (i record the ride also with a garmin 530)
-Hue zigbee (light strip while riding)
-Wifi (audio and video streaming)
so the idea was to force most compatible wifi devices to 5ghz band by setting band steering and the remaining older devices to channel 6 only.
ant+ used channel 10 only, ble and zigbee will learn from wifi that they cannot use ch6 area,
their smart advertising and channel allocation algorithms will devide the remaining channels between each other.
now test!
beautiful, did watopia hilly route, erg tests and fast resistance change related to the %
it seems to work!!!
in addition, before i startup zwift, i reset the atv as this clears the ble stacks, just to be sure
Some good info @Marcel_wahooshift.
So in short put the ATV next to the trainer.
close to the trainer’s ble antenna location, with saris its left side. and watch possible interference from 2.4ghz wifi
Thank you for solving my problem! I had the exact same scenario and just moving the ATV close to my Saris solved my issues.
Hi all. Sorry for my English. I had just bought a Saris H3 and when I ride on “normal” ride there is no problème. When I try workout, with erg mode on, there is no response on Apple TV. But it appears on my devices menu… I really don’t understand.
thank you for your help
See my posts from Sep '20 – yesterday I updated Saris firmware and calibrated. Then I tried bluetooth with ATV. Spindown calibration does not work and there is still severe lag in resistance changes for terrain and ERG. Same results when devices are paired with the companion app.
I cant believe a year later and this issue is still not fixed. Back to ANT+
