Ride controllers stopped changing gears

Zwift Ride controllers stopped changing gear

Hi All, Zwift Ride with KICKR core here (with the controllers that come with it). I bought this the week before I went on holiday, so only did a couple of rides but everything working OK. I come back from holiday and with no changes made start a ride and the controllers won’t change gears anymore. Tried turning them off and on of course but no luck. I believe “virtual shifting” is a setting but I can’t find it now (but it won’t have been changed since it was working correctly anyway). Any help very appreciated!

I noticed there was an update for the trainer available, did that but no difference. Went through the controller tutorial, every button works - including the paddles for steering and braking, but not for changing gear.

Hi @Ellis_Paul welcome to Zwift forums.

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Looking at your server logs, I can confirm your KICKR Core is on the latest firmware v 1.5.36.

However, your Ride controllers are still on factory firmware version 1.0.0. Please update that using the Zwift Companion app. Instructions are here.

This is a context-aware setting in the game menu that appears only when your trainer and Ride controllers are paired.

Noticed there was a controller update available too. Applied but no difference

Are you sure the firmware took? The logs from your most recent session is still showing the controllers are on FW v1.0.0, and that’s why I’m asking.

Thanks Shuji - I think our replies crossed but I did notice there was a controller update. Companion app says 1.2.0 now. Do I need to try a ride or something to get the logs to update?

Ok, good! Yes please try a ride of at least 2km so the activity will save to your Activity feed…

You should be aware there’s two things that will help in your case as I noticed you’re Zwifting on an Apple TV.

  1. Always force-close the Zwift app after you save-and-exit (or trash-and-exit) your session. Here’s how. Force-closing clears out the app’s temp files. Simply swiping an app into the background does not. Backgrounding and force-closing are two separate things.

  2. Similarly - putting the ATV box to sleep is not the same thing as rebooting it. Power cycling the ATV regularly flushes the operating system’s temp files, and that is also a good thing. There’s three ways to power cycle per Apple’s support site.

Thanks again. I’ll try again tomorrow probably now. Niote though I also tried on iPad with the same result so I don’t think it’s related to ATV specifically

iOS and tvOS are both considered mobile operating systems. Apply the same app hygiene either way, and things will work much better.
