Resistance connection requires power source connection

Hi,

I’ve run into a really annoying bug that hasn’t gone away in the last few updates. I’m running Zwift on an Apple MacBook Pro M2 14" 2023 with Sonoma 14.5. I use Bluetooth to connect to the following (directly from the computer, not via the companion app):

  • Quarq PM-DZ-A1 spider (power source and cadence) with firmware v10
  • Wahoo Kickr A7FA v4 AKA 2018 smart trainer (resistance) with firmware v3.5.2
  • Garmin HRM Pro+ (heart rate) which I think we can ignore

The trouble is that I cannot just connect the Kickr as resistance. It simply won’t show up as a device unless I first disconnect my Quarq from the power source and then connect the Kickr as a power source. Then I can also connect it as resistance, and finally disconnect it as power and reconnect my Quarq for power (and cadence). It all stays connected for that session, but it doesn’t reconnect like that the next time I open Zwift!

I have to do this every time that I use Zwift, and it’s really annoying me. Especially at $20 a month, since this is a supported scenario, I don’t get why it’s so difficult to do. Can an engineer please follow up with a proper bug report?

Hi @Andy_Jordan_BFAST, Welcome to the Zwift Forums.
I’m Fernanda, part of the support specialist team at Zwift.

I understand your concern regarding pairing the Kickr as the resistance source only and the Quarq as the power source. I must let you know that even if you decide to use an external power meter with a direct drive trainer as the Kickr, the pairing process in the game will need to be:

  • First pair the trainer as your power source then after pairing your trainer as controllable and/or cadence, pair the power meter as your power source, as we share in our public article for pairing your devices.

That’s the reason you are unable to connect the Kickr as resistance if you pair first the Quarq as power/cadence source. In this case, you will need to disconnect all the devices at the end of your session, and to avoid connecting and disconnecting the Quarq in the next session, consider pairing the trainer first and the Quarq as the second device.

Ride On.

That’s too bad :smiling_face_with_tear: I wish they’d just stay connected between sessions. Instead it auto reconnects to the Quarq since that was paired last, but then won’t auto connect to the Kickr hence this rigamarole of manually disconnecting and reconnecting in the “proper” (annoyingly required) order.

I have an ANT+ USB dongle…I feel like everything just reconnected appropriately when I was using that. I’ll try it again instead of doing it over Bluetooth. Maybe easier than dealing with this.

I have a StagesBike SB20 which has two pairing options for power and cadence, and when using ANT+ it does seem to remember my selection. ANT+ pairing is also faster so when the dongle is present it will win the race vs the Bluetooth connection and always pair via ANT+.

The ~/Documents/Zwift/knowndevices.xml file stores the preferences for paired devices, so deleting that file will reset the game to defaults for pairing if you ever need to do that.
