New to Zwift (Hub), trouble with MTB setup and resistance

Thanks for the guide I’ve just set this up as per your instructions.

One thing I’m confused about is how do I connect zwift through the QZ app?

I have my trainer working great in the QZ app but it works with either the app or zwift not both?

Any help would be great, thanks

qz is acting like a bridge from your bike to zwift
so connect qz to your bike and on another device you can use zwift to connect to qz

actually in the beta version of qz ì handled also a single device setup!

Ah I see now. I needed to select my phone as the device that pops up in zwift.

Thanks

@Jamie_Ashby You’ve figured it out already, but just to emphasize for future visitors:

You’ll have to simply select your smartphone / tablet / other device running the QZ app on the ‘Paired Devices’ screen that is shown when starting Zwift.

So, instead of chosing your Zwift Hub, Wahoo Kickr, etc., simply select your phone (or other device running QZ) instead. That’s it.

An example setup could look like this:
Zwift Hub → QZ app running on smartphone → Zwift running on your tablet

Guys as a fellow MTB’er trust me when i say just go on ebay or FB marketplace and buy a cheap road/cx bike and plop that on your trainer and just leave the mtb for shredding the trails irl.

The first accessory every mountain biker should buy is a cheap road/gravel/trainer bike.

Although I didn’t want to, I am already going down this route…
It’s really not that easy to find something adequate, that matches my size, the budget, …
So for now I am even refusing to switch to a road bike for my avatar!

Plus (not that I would be riding at a level at which that would matter, but still) doesn’t the riding position on a road racer train different muscles than on a MTB? I am just wondering since I tried to lie down flat (as if on a road bike) one or two times and it felt… different?

This is more a matter of bike fit. It’s possible to get a road bike that fits like your MTB. It’s also possible to build a MTB for the trainer that has bigger gearing, which you would not want to use on trails. Older MTBs can usually handle larger chainrings.

True indeed, an older MTB would probably also be an option.
Thanks for bringing it up @Paul_Southworth !

You have to be practical about this and get the most out of a given situation.
You can definitely use a trainer to help maintain/improve some aspects of cycling whether road or MTB but it is not an exact copy.

You can do cardio fitness training and even work on some muscle strength exercises such as standing or various cadence drills.
It won’t be mountain biking and there are many skills that you just can’t train indoors.

The trainer bike is just the tool you use for interacting with Zwift.
Zwift uses in door trainers and indoor trainers work best with a road bike or gravel bike.
You can design a MTB cardio / strength workout but you will interact best with Zwift with a non MTB.

At the same time, you will find the advantages of using Zwift, ie no interruptions, stoplights, other trail users, wrecks etc.

My old Cannondale M500 (circa 1988) has a triple crank so I can Zwift with it if I want.
The geometry from the 80’s was so small, I hit my knees on the bars in sprints.
Cheap road bike is my advice.

I wish that this would be communicated more clearly on Zwifts website and especially in the shop. Of course, the Zwift Hub does more less work with a MTB, and Zwift itself does as well, but the amount of extra effort you have to put in to make it half as enjoyable as with a road bike is to be reckoned with, especially for people not so fond of working on their setups.

I am looking into road bikes already, and if there’s opportunity I’ll try to get a cheap one and also upgrade to cleats. However, I really want to point out the great work by @Roberto_Viola. Without his app, I would certainly not be a Zwift subscriber today. He’s responsible that I could get into this great activity and I’m really thankful for that!

Ride on you guys! And fear the day when I get a road bike and start setting KOM records.

I think you can use ERG mode for workouts. (I have power pedals and a dumb trainer) but my info is second hand.

I live in Illinois (flat) and what I like about Zwift is I can train far a steep 30 sec climb, 60 sec climb, 5 min etc.

That would not be possible where I live.
I assume, if you have at least 1 big hill or mountain IRL, you can climb for 30 sec turn around and start again for 1 min, 5 min etc.

And, its never muddy on Zwift.

LOL, thought about exactly the same thing when I was riding a Tour de Zwift stage today.
Rain was pouring, but no dirt to take care of.

Still had to wash my clothes though, somehow that stuff got wet as well…

@Roberto_Viola
IT seems like I came to the right place. I have been using zwift with my wahoo kicker for about 2 1/2 years. Recently something changes and my resistance became way off. I can’t seem to fix it the way it used to be. It seems that your app might help. I use zwift with an ipad.
thank you.

yes sure you can use the gear tile for this! let me know if you have any issues!

Thank you Where are the instructions found to download it?

just download it from the app store (search for QZ) and it’s pretty straightforward, qz app on a device and zwift on another)

in the qz settings, enable the gear tile in the tile section

Thank you!!

Thank you!!
