KICKR v6 WiFi connection | Wahoo Direct Connect [October 2022; February 2023]

Hi Folks,

We’re seeing reports of Wahoo Direct Connect no longer appearing in the Pairing Screen since as early as Tuesday January 31, 2023. So far this seems to be on PC and all Apple device types. Please update if you noticed this earlier.

This currently is being investigated.

*Edited to include PC as an affected device type

Much appreciated!

@Paul_Hartland do you mind posting the macOS version of your MacBook Pro? Are you on Ventura?

@Ben_Nordstrom Would you please confirm your Windows 10 PC and KICKR v6 are connected to the same network?

@Nick_Squillari_VeloK Apple has new requirements for iOS/tvOS 16.2 and up regarding multicast network communications necessary for discovery of WDC and KICKR v6 devices. We have verified the proper entitlements are in place, but are currently investigating a possible build issue on Apple TV where the entitlement may not have been updated for our latest Apple TV release.

Hi Mike, my MacBook is a few years old (Retina 13-inch, Early 2015) and has macOS Monterey Version 12.6.3 (21G419) installed.

They’ve been connected to the same network since I’ve had the v6 and never had issues until Wednesday. I will double check today.

Same issue here and also first noticed Tuesday Jan 31. I’m on a 2022 MacBook Air.

Here’s a very cumbersome workaround that I found after lots of experimenting. Maybe this can help someone or in the hunt for a solution;

  • Launch Zwift and enter pairing screen. Only BLE connection available.
  • Launch TrainerRoad desktop app and go into that pairing screen to see both BLE and Direct Connect options be available. Leave this open but do not connect.
  • Toggle back to Zwift and the Direct Connect option is now available again.
  • Connect and ride on.
  • After pairing you can close the TrainerRoad app.

Right. Only the wahoo won’t even update. Which should be auto on the 6. Won’t even happen when done manually.

There is another thread discussing the kickr V6 wifi not working. Consensus is it was the 1.33.2 update (for PC, at least) that caused the failure).

(doesn’t seem to let me include links)

There is a wifi update for the v6 that got released today. Note there is a Firmware for the v6 itself AND a firmware for the wifi. The update today is for the wifi only.

Rode this morning and WiFi source was discoverable on Zwift again. Worked flawlessly for 3 hour ride as it had. Hoping this puts this issue to bed.

Hi Ben,

Tried Zwift today on Apple TV and also found wifi was again discoverable. Thanks for your help. Paul

No issues here on AppleTV or MacOS. However, iPad and iPhone OS still not working for me (without a workaround similar to the above).

Having it too on 2 iPad Pro, function fine on 2 MacBook

Dropouts started again for me this week. v6 over WiFi connection Windows machine

Same problem here, but on Kickr Bike v2. WiFi disconnects. First time previous week or the week before that (w20/21).

@shooj to flag. unsure if others have run into this. I had another drop this morning

Ben, are you pretty confident that this is at our end rather than the trainer?

I can send logs or anything if you’d like. Or if you have ideas on how I can test/verify that it’s Zwift or my equipment I’m all ears. But nothing in my setup has changed in the last 2 months besides the latest Zwift updates. And Kickr v6 firmware (WiFi and regular) hasn’t been updated since February. And since the last issues in February when Wahoo updated the firmware it had been flawless until about 8 or 9 days ago.

I can start with a unplug/replug of the trainer today and see if that helps. I won’t be able to test starting this Sunday since I’ll be off normal setup for about a month.

It’s an educated guess based on these occurrences and any recent back end changes to either Zwift and the Trainer. And they really started during the recent Zwift updates. So level of confidence is low :person_shrugging:
