KICKR CORE ERG random power drops

Hi all, just thought I’d send an update. Today I tried putting every device I could think of in airplane mode, and went into wahoo app settings and noticed that the Power Smoothing setting was off, and did a 42 minute workout with zero issues. Not sure which of the two it was, but looks like I’m back to normal.

Finally an update:

I got the retailer to replace the trainer with a new Core. And - based on two training session over the summer - that solved the problem! No random power-drops during ERG mode. Also the “new” Core is so much more silent!

I’m not impressed by the Wahoo Support. They have been totally useless. They just wasted a lot of my time.

I’m still on the original firmware, might try to update but I’m a little hesitant doing that as long as I have no problems.

Thanks to all of you helpfull people in here!

I had a feeling this wasn’t a “no hardware problem, have a nice day” issue. I’m on my 3rd! Kickr Core now. First one was great for 10 months, then the optical sensor quit. Wahoo customer service was excellent and promptly sent me a new refurb. The refurb had a bad bearing and noticeable wobble in the wheel. Called customer service and they sent a new unit (didn’t even ask for the refurb unit back).

Now I’m experiencing the same high’ish power (200+watts) dropout in ERG mode as discussed in this thread. Lower power output (140w/Z2) does not have this issue, but as soon as the threshold interval kicks in I get the drops. This happened during my FTP step test too! I’m afraid to call support again as I’m sure they will think I’m one of “those guys” that’s never satisfied. UGH!

This is so disturbing during a ride…I’m deep in threshold and Zwift is yelling at me to increase power!

Anyway, I’ll update as soon as I have any different news.

I’ve only just seen this thread and I think its worth linking to mine (or vice versa) since I’ve been battling a similar issue - Bug: ERG mode has intermittent drops in resistance and reported power (Wahoo Kickr)

I get the exact same power drops in ERG mode on my two Kickrs (a v5 2021 and a v6 2022) (screenshot below)

Long story short, its a software/firmware bug in how it detects “chain tension” - if you pedal in a certain way the chain can go slack (ish) at parts of the pedal stroke and read as zero power, it seems. Wahoo have acknowledged the bug but refuse to devote development time to fixing it.

What’s doubly irritating is that even turning on the “power smoothing” in the Wahoo firmware… doesn’t smooth the power. And turning on the “3sec avg” in Zwift similarly… still shows the drops rather than smoothing them out as you might reasonably expect.

I’ve ordered some power meter pedals so that I can use them as the power source (and the Kickr as the “controllable” source) when in ERG mode, and I’m planning to test tomorrow whether that “fixes” it.

Hey Steve, did your problem ever get resolved? I’m having the same problem as original user and decided to get the tacx 3m, just want to make sure it’s not a eco system problem.
