Looking for some advice.
ive been having connection drop outs on the ZRL races that is completly ruining the experience.
Ive had issues with the Click over bluetooth before so now i use my phone and the companion app as a bridge. This works flawlessly until a tueday night.
Hardwire ethernet to a access point next to the zwift only PC and trainer with strong speeds.
Works perfect unti i do a race with constant high power and efforts.
I suspect the trainer is overheating as it only happens when in races and once during a longer ride 3hrs after climbing the epic KOM.
Other than putting a fan next to the trainer, does anyone have any other tips to stop this from happening?
If the trainer is overheating you should be able to replicate the failure with a similar effort using the Wahoo app instead of Zwift. Aiming a fan at the trainer is not a bad idea if you want to rule out that possibility.
Pairing via Companion depends on both Bluetooth performance in the phone, and WiFi performance in the phone (unless you connect the phone to Ethernet as well).
It might also make sense to work on improving Bluetooth reliability in the PC. What is the Bluetooth adapter you are using in the PC? If it’s built-in and doesn’t perform well, I would disable it and add a Bluetooth dongle on a USB extension cable, and I would choose a dongle based on this research:
The TP-Link UB400 works well for me but there are others with the same chipset.
Hi Paul.
Thanks for the response.
Thanks for the link to the Zwiftalizer YouTube page. Very useful. I’ve ordered a new dongle and extension to see if I can improve the Bluetooth set up rather than using the companion app.
I’ve used zwiftalizer in the past and put the last two Zwift races that I had big drops out and it says i didn’t have any Bluetooth drop outs. I’m guessing this is because I was using the app.
It did show that the companion app was trying to connect. Both races this was the same at the time I lost connection. I’m using a iPhone 16pro for C/A with good stable WiFi.

Bluetooth performance in modern iPhones seems to be quite good. I would still consider rebooting all the network equipment since anything funky going on with the router could affect Companion pairing even if signal strength looks good. Plus is quick and free.
When I had a trainer overheating watts dopped maxing at about 180. I am 100 kgs and was running 100% trainer difficulty and grinding very slowly up the radio tower climb. I did not have dropouts.
Had to drop the TD to 60% or so and now no problem.
