Gearing keeps dropping to 1st gear

Hi All,

Has anyone had the following issue. When a start a ride, my gear starts in 8th but then quickly goes down to 1st gear when I try to shift up. It has happened today, 12/14/25, on all the routes I’ve tried. There also is a vibration on my handlebars. I’ve tried to disconnect and connect everything via Bluetooth but the same problem keeps occurring. Thank You.

Hi @Todd_Laveen

Welcome to the forums. This is Haziel from Zwift Support. Thanks for sharing the details of the issues with the gears dropping, and what you’ve tried so far, which helps narrow things down.

After reviewing the information in your logs, I can confirm that all of your firmware and software are up to date, which is great. However, I did notice some disconnections during your sessions. That could explain why the shifting isn’t holding properly.

Please take a look at this support article: BLE and ANT+ Interference Troubleshooting Tips. It walks through common causes like Wi-Fi overlap, nearby devices, and placement of your trainer/controller.

If the issue continues after following those steps, I’d recommend trying the Zwift Companion App as a Bluetooth bridge. Many riders have found that bridging through the app stabilizes their connection and resolves shifting glitches.

Regarding the vibration, I recommend performing a factory reset, gently pressing and holding the big Z button for 30 seconds on your controllers. This should restart the unit completely.

In case you need more assistance, please feel free to contact us.

Can you share details about the device you are running Zwift on? What is the make/model of the device. If it’s a PC, does it have onboard Bluetooth or are you using a USB dongle (if so, which one?)

Hello Paul

Standard ZwiftRide with Wahoo KickR Core. I use an iPad Air for the device. In the past, I have had no connecting issues. I use the iPad Air for the Zwift game/routes and I generally listen to content on my iPhone with AirPods. It has never been a problem for well over a year. Then yesterday, the system would not shift gears and I was getting a vibration on the bars as if the system was trying to perform another function. Thank you for viewing.

Regards, Todd
