Garmin / zwift hub HR broadcast issues

Hi from France!

Everything was running well with my Ipad / garmin fenix 6 pro / Zwift hub.
Watch was paired in ant+ as HR monitor to the trainer through zwift companion, and in bluetooth with the Ipad.

I switched to new garmin fenix 8 and I struggle…
I could not pair the watch in ant+ to the trainer, it only appear as a bluetooth (BT) device.

As a consequence I face 2 situations:

  1. watch connected to the “smart trainer” and paired as a BT heart rate monitor in zwift companion: no HR recorded or displayed either in zwift or in garmin connect activity
  2. watch connected to the power meter and speed / cadence sensors of the the hub: full stats on zwift included HR, partial stats on garmin connect (no distance). Could be acceptable but I loose the possibility to control the smart trainer from the watch on zwift: settle and adjust power, use a training from the watch…

I could not identify how to solve this, how could I display / link the ANT+ HR to zwift companion?? Because this seems to possibly solve it…

thanks!!!

Hello @Matthieu_Alzial from California! Welcome to Zwift forums.

Shuji at Zwift HQ. In general - smart-watches-as-heart-rate-monitors do not pair well to the Zwift Hub. See this support article

It looks like your preferred Zwifting computer is an iPad? If so, please try to pair the watch’s heart rate signal directly to the Zwift app instead of bonding it to the Hub trainer. I also see you’ve been logging into the main Zwift app on an iPhone - don’t do that. Logging in to Zwift on multiple devices creates problems, including this symptom.

You may also want to make sure the watch’s firmware is up to date, and also see Garmin’s instructions to enable heart rate data broadcasting.

One last thing - if you have the Garmin Connect app running on a smartphone or laptop - it may be hijacking the watch’s Bluetooth signal. Please disable / uninstall Garmin Connect to make sure it’s not hijacking the signal.

Hi Shuji!
I’m suprised about the stance that’s not possible to pair a smartwatch as a HRM as it was my configuration with my previous watch?

Nevertheless, please let me rephrase your procedure so that I got it 100% correct

=> no pairing of the watch as a HRM in ZC
=> pairing of the watch with the smart trainer through the watch (correct?)
=> shut down garmin connect on the iphone, and shut down Zwift app on the Iphone
=> launch Zwift on Ipad and indoor bike activity on the watch (with broadcasting of HR)
=> pair the watch as a HRM on the zwift app

Do I got it correct?

Dear Shuji, I tried the procedure, as summarized, but as soon as the watch is paired to the trainer (through the watch, not through ZC) HR is 0 or freezed.

Hi @Matthieu_Alzial

We might be saying the same thing, but I am confused - is your heart rate monitor still bonded to the trainer? What I’m asking you to try is to unpair the HRM from the Hub. You would do that in the Companion app > Hardware tab.

Then: pair the HRM in the main Zwift app’s pairing screen.

Hello Shuji.
Yes my watch is now unbounded in ZC.

When I start a virtual bike activity on the watch, it ask to pair a home trainer. If I do that the watch is paired to the HT (not paired / bounded on zwift companion), I get speed, cadence, watts datas on the watch and the possibility to manage the home trainer through the watch (by launching a training session built on garmin for ex, or adjust the resistance through the watch). BUT I got no heart rate or freezed heart rate on the watch and on zwift.

So now the only way to have my heart rate recorded is: start a virtual bike activity without HT pairing, start zwift and upload HR from the watch and other datas from the zwift hub.
As a consequence I got partial datas on my garmin activities and loose the hability to drive the HT from the watch.
Which is annoying because everything was running well with my previous model garmin fenix watch (6 pro).

To me the problem comes the fact that I could not pair the watch as a HRM on ZC with ANT+ signal (I only see the fenix 8 with bluetooth).

Hi @Matthieu_Alzial

Thanks for trying the things I recommended - the way your devices are paired look much better in your server logs, and I’m no longer seeing simultaneous logins. Both good things.

At this point, you might want to make sure your Fenix 8 firmware is updated. According to this story, Garmin issued a firmware update that fixed a long list of bugs with this relatively new watch.

It might not be a bad idea to scan Garmin’s support forums and see if there’s any other users have run into Bluetooth pairing issues for third party apps like Zwift.

OK thanks, I’ll check that!

Hi there, despite software update on my fenix 8, no changes.
Still not able to pair through ant+ to the HT, so cannot benefit from full functionalities…

Hi
I have the same issue with my hub, both with my old Fenix 7 and now on an 8. My only way to solve it was a HR chest monitor.
