Coffee break not lasting full 3 minutes

Has anyone had issues with coffee break not lasting the full three minutes.
It’s hit and miss and hard to duplicate. I’ve already been in contact with Zwift support.

A couple weeks ago, while riding with a pace partner, I started a coffee break and it seem to work fine, when I return, I was sitting on the side of the road alone.

I’ve reinstalled the app and done everything they have asked.

It seemed to work fine for the past week and then yesterday while on a group ride, it left me on the side of the road once again.
I actually stood there and watched it for about 30 seconds to make sure it was holding the 21 mph that our group was doing before I walked away.

Only two times this is ever happened, just wondering if I’m the only one. I’ve used coffee break five or six times in the past week and it seems to work fine and then suddenly doesn’t.

Hi @_YetiXing

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Thanks for this report. You strike me as someone who uses Coffee Stop regularly and know how it should / should not work, so I believe you that something’s not right.

If anyone reading along is also seeing this, please weigh in so we can raise visibility on possible common threads.

  • On which OS platform are you running Zwift?
  • Which version of the Zwift game app?
  • Is the “short” Coffee Stop the first one you used during that ride?

I’ve already been working with tech support

Apple iOS. iPad.

Using the latest Zwift app. I think this is what caused it all.

I don’t know what short coffee stop means

I was on the dirt group family values, Tuesday ride and at 30 minutes. I took a three minute coffee break.

When I walked away, it was holding 20 to 21 mph when I got back, I’m sitting on the side of the road alone.

First time this happened I was on one of the D group bot rides. About a week ago. The next couple of times I use the coffee stop it worked fine., Then yesterday again left on the side of the road.

I can’t say I’ve had the described experience.

What I have experienced, is who the coffee break attaches to gets lost. I suspect some are irradiated to have someone tag along, so they mess with their speed to drop you. Then, I’ve experienced weirdness when picking up someone else- jumping to speeds as much as 60 km/h, etc.

you only get 30 seconds during the first 5 minutes of a ride, then it goes to 3 minutes after 30 minutes of the ride.

We’re in the middle of a phased game update this week. We always prefer to have a version number for triaging a root cause because “latest” isn’t reliable. You can look up what version is installed in the game’s setting menu under the About tab.

Sounds like someone else was finishing their ride, came to a stop, and you were lucky enough to get glued to them.

Coffee stop has functioned this way since release.

While I don’t know if program wise it’s possible, they should tie on to the nearest beacon.
But in this particular case, and most cases; it’s that you got stuck to someone leaving the ride.

This is why I call it Coffee Roulette

Not trying to be a jerk, but why do you need to use the coffee break so much? I’ve rarely used it myself. Maybe use the toilet before you start your ride? Just saying, if it isn’t working well for you, prepare yourself to be on the trainer for an hour or whatever and hopefully you won’t need it.

Game 1.69.0

Build number 131597

Because it’s a feature that has worked in the past for extremely long rides when you’re riding with a familiar group. Helps keep everybody together.

I think you may be onto something. When I finish my ride today, I intentionally started a coffee break just to see how it would react and I went from 22 miles an hour to 14 miles an hour back to 19 miles an hour with three different people. It seems to be latching on and jumping from rider to rider.

Of course, not everybody that uses a coffee break is going to the toilet.

Sometimes we’re on group rides with friends or with one of the bot rides and someone knocks at the door, or your spouse needs something. And it’s nice to be able to take the break go check on something and come right back. The way it’s designed is to hold you where you were. if I just wanted to stop and roll to the side of the road, what’s the point in the coffee break. Idk

I use it often if I need to jump off the bike to check on something. It’s become quite valuable if you’re trying to put time in on the trainer. But if it’s not dependable, then it’s useless. Up until now it has been very dependable.

You learn something new every day. I’ve only taken a coffee break in three minutes after 30 minutes of riding. Thanks.

This would explain what’s going on if it’s grabbing onto somebody that slowing down and pulling off to leave Zwift. But seems like a bad idea. :joy:

yes absolutely, it should work as intended. I just rarely find a need for it.

Father of two. Never know when your needed for a couple minutes. :joy:

I just just checked again. And now I’m showing a version 1.70.0 is available.

Updating again.
Will test tomorrow.

After reading this thread I decided to test the coffee break today. It showed up as available after 33 minutes of riding.
I was riding solo, not around anyone, when coffee break activated it worked for less than 60 seconds and left me on the side of the road at 0 watts and 0 mph.
First pic is when I activated it.
Second pic is shortly after.

something is definitely wrong, it shouldn’t even be an option if no one is around you to “attach to”

EDIT, oh there is someone right behind you

There is a rider immediately behind you, and apparently stayed behind you the whole time (or maybe also was on coffee break).

At no point in time has coffee break ever continued you onwards as a solo rider at whatever speed you were going.

It locks onto a nearby rider, and holds you to them.
If that person stops; you stop. If that person quits, you stop.

If nobody is around, coffee break is disabled; as all it would do otherwise is stop you.

What you experienced is “correct as is”
