Apple TV - HRM issues

Please help me understand why this is still an issue? I still need to “reset” my HRM nearly every ride sometimes twice. HRM shows 225 hr, Garmin HRM and Wahoo HRM. Wahoo strap preferred so I use it more but both have issues. I reset per wahoo HRM reset instructions and it might work might not. You recommend putting Zwift on the larger screen but this is where the issues are. All issues with Zwift I experience ONLY in the Apple TV app.

FWIW, I use a Wahoo TICKR FIT with Apple TV and have never had any issues. Similarly, the Garmin Dual I used previously also worked flawlessly.

Sorry, I realise this doesn’t help your situation at all; I just wanted to let you know that it’s not a universal problem.

Thanks, appreciate the reply - the only reason I have the garmin HRM is because the first wahoo had these same issues. Started with wahoo, then garmin far fewer issues. Now back to a 2nd wahoo and these 225 hr issues. I don’t have the same problems when pairing to my garmin edge. So it’s either Apple TV and or Zwift. Everything is up to date. I even opened the wahoo app on my phone to see what it was showing. Normal hr while Zwift Apple TV 225.

How far away is the ATV? In my first Zwift setup I placed the ATV too far away from the bike and I experienced a lot of dropouts.

6-8ft. Just on a tv stand in front of me.

When my HRM does that (with Apple TV, or even when riding outdoors) it seems to be an indication that the strap (and the wires within) are coated with dried sweat/salt and the strap needs to be cleaned or, if that doesn’t fix the issue, replaced.

Appreciate the feedback -few things to note- I’ve replaced straps, batteries, and even HRMs as mentioned this is my 2nd wahoo 4 straps (both originals, wahoo warranty and a replacement I purchased) plus a Garmin HRM. I have been wetting the pads on the strap as recommended. However when starting Zwift, HRM shows connected but reading 225, but I open the wahoo app on my phone and HRM reads correct without needing to flip the battery. Flip the battery and most of the time Zwift starts showing correct HR this time it appeared correct on pair but wasn’t correct during ride. You can see in the screenshot where I flipped the battery again during the ride and it started reading. leads me to believe it’s something to do with Zwift/Apple TV.

I have experienced the 225 issue outdoor which is why I purchased the 4th strap.

I know Apple TV has a 3 device limit via BLE. The remote is 1 leaving 2 for Zwift. I presume the wahoo bike as a whole is counted as 1 the HRM taking the last? I never get the pairing error that I’ve maxed out the connections so something else is going on.

There is only one screenshot included in your post, and it appears to be just a partial. If you have more, please post those. Other things to try (which you may have already tried):

  1. Force-close the Zwift app after every use
  2. Reboot the ATV
  3. Make sure your HRM is not paired to something else while running Zwift

I have used a Garmin Dual HRM with Zwift on ATV (and iPad) for nearly 5 years now with no issues, except for when the strap is ‘dirty’, so I’m a bit perplexed by your issue. I don’t think it’s an issue with Zwift, or ATV, but something about your specific setup.

I force close at the end of each ride then power down atv. This is just an extra tv in the basement and is only used for Zwift.

The only other device the HRM is paired to is my edge and phone but neither are in use while Zwifting. I’ve even unpaired from my phone to see if this would help, it didn’t.

I to am perplexed by this issue as I can’t seem to solve it. The partial screenshot is where the issue happened the rest of that ride it recorded fine after the 2nd battery flip.

Going to ride here in a few and pair via companion to see if it happens. The only thing I have not replaced was the ATV purchased new when I started Zwift. Being that I have had saris and Wahoo trainer and bike with zero drops the issue is only with HRMs just wish I could kit up get in and ride without the dang HRM issue…

Just out of curiosity, have you used the HRM fine on other apps in the same environment (indoor training), such as Wahoo SYSTM/TrainerRoad etc and NOT got the same issue?

i.e. what makes you think Zwift is the issue and not your HRM strap or something in your environment?

One thing you could try is using gel rather than “wetting” the strap, they sell gel for use in hospitals for attaching HR monitors for medical purposes and you can buy it on amazon or ebay or whatever for next to nothing especially since you only use a tiny amount each time. Its much more conductive and longer lasting since its designed for the purpose, and it helps especially if you find this problem occurs at the start of the ride (before you are sweating much).

Only other thing I would add is that I went through several Wahoo Tickr HRMs and had issues with them before switching to a Polar strap (“H10” i think its called?) which has been completely reliable ever since and no issues over the same time frame as I got frustrated with and returned or replaced about 3 Tickrs.

Hey D.A

Just out of curiosity, have you used the HRM fine on other apps in the same environment (indoor training), such as Wahoo SYSTM/TrainerRoad etc and NOT got the same issue?

  • Only direct to Garmin edge while on the trainer, no issues at that time
  • HRM to Garmin issue did happen - MTB, resolved with new (4th) strap. The one I’m on now.

i.e. what makes you think Zwift is the issue and not your HRM strap or something in your environment?

  • I am not 100% sure that it is Zwift, pairing to ZC app on next ride to see how it does
  • I have had 2 wahoo HRMs and 4 straps (original on each, 1 warranty, 1 purchased)
  • I also have a Garmin HRM purchased trying to resolve this issue
  • My wife uses the iPad wahoo set up (HRM/Trainer) no issues. So its Zwift/ATV that is causing my issues.

One thing you could try is using gel rather than “wetting” the strap, they sell gel for use in hospitals for attaching HR monitors…

  • Original wahoo was doing this first 15 mins or so then the HRM would start reading accurately, but in these instances it was always low hr, not the pegged 225 hr that I have been dealing with for much longer. This 15 min lag was resolved by wetting/gel

Only other thing I would add is that I went through several Wahoo Tickr HRMs and had issues with them before switching to a Polar strap (“H10” i think its called?) which has been completely reliable…

*One other person locally told me the same, if ZC connection tonight doesn’t help. This may be the next item up.

There are a lot of HRM/ATV issues in the threads, I am a bug fixer by day so experiencing this issue on a vetted platforms bugs me that I can’t seem to resolve it on my side.
