Accuracy of race positions

Hello, I’m pretty new to Zwift and I did my first race today in the Zwift Games.
I was with the lead group for the whole race and was leading in the final kilometer but blew up at the end and was passed on the line. When I looked at the results I saw that I actually finished in second place 22 seconds behind the winner.

Which leads me to ask the question, how accurate are the race positions? Are the gaps artificially shortened to make you think you are closer together than you actually are?

The results screen formatting is a little confusing at first glance; it’s showing you 0.22 seconds down on the winner (which would fit with your description of being passed on the line).
