Good morning – New zwifter here seeking guidance on 20 min FTP test. Are you able to virtually shift while doing the 20 minute FTP test? During the last five minutes I would like to gear down to a higher intensity to grind out a little bit more power. However, the test seems to keep me at an average cadence of 90-95 RPM even when I use the right shift buttons on Zwift play, I get no change in intensity. Does the ERG mode remain on or do I need to manually toggle off during the 20 min
In the 20min FTP test the 20min block is supposed to be a free-ride block that you can pedal with whatever intensity or cadence you would like to hit your power. Not sure what’s happening in your case.
Thanks Aaron. If the FTP Test is functioning properly, am I to assume the ERG mode will automatically be disabled and i should be free to virtually shift to any gear level? If so I may need to check my Zwift Play Firmware
When conducting an FTP test, using ERG mode is advantageous – it’s precisely where smart trainers and ERG mode shine.
Perhaps I am naive but I have never heard any coach suggest that I should do a 20 minute power test in ERG mode. Ramp test, sure.
you say tomato, I say tomato lol
if just doing just a free ride why would ERG ever be on? from the moment that ERG was mentioned, I inferred he is doing a 20min FTP ramp up test.
Zwift’s standard FTP test is a workout that runs Erg mode prior to then giving you a 20minute free ride segment. Sorry for broken link, but look here:

Ah OK. I think you are mistaken about which test he’s doing. There is no such thing as a 20 minute ramp test. The 20 minute test in Zwift includes some portions with ERG mode enabled (or at least a power target) and then 20 minutes with it disabled and no power target because it’s whatever you can do.
Let’s be real clear…I was doing the STD FTP Test. I am trying to ascertain if during the 20 min “free ride” portion that measures your FTP if I have to disable the ERG mode or if the test will auto disable out of ERG. If so, will I be able to use virtual shifting to change intensity? I was not able to do that in the last test using Zwift Play… Thinking it may have been a firmware update that I was missing.
…I think you’re correct lol!
The ramp-up test lasts for about 20 minutes, which is what I was referring to, but the other test, “which I never do”, includes a 20-minute free ride.
Right, what should happen is … even in ERG mode that 20min section should be a “free ride” section and should just let you use whatever power or cadence you want. You should not need to manually turn off ERG mode for that 20min block.
