Zwift Ride completely blocked

Yesterday, the chain came off from my Zwift Ride.

It took some effort to get it back on, but once I managed that, I couldn’t get any movement from the Ride anymore. The pedals seem to be completely stuck — I can’t move them at all, no matter how much force I apply.

I’ve already tried unplugging and plugging the device back in, but nothing seems to help.

All the connections appear to be working, as the app still connects properly to my Apple TV.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on and how to fix it?

This sounds like a mechanical problem. Hard to diagnose without a bunch of pictures or video, or take it to a bike shop so it can be seen in person.

Wondering if you have the thru-axle adapters on the trainer installed on both sides. People often omit the one on the drive side which can cause binding once the thru-axle is tight.

Take the chain off again. Do the pedals turn freely now without the chain? Is it the rear that’s locked up?

I loosened the Kickr Core a bit at the back. Now I can pedal again, but sometimes it slips and occasionally makes noise. It’s definitely not rotating smoothly.

You loosened the thru-axle? That makes me even more suspicious that you don’t have the drive side adapter installed. Post photos with the bike off the trainer.

I don’t see the adapter on the right side of the trainer, and I don’t see the freehub pawls, or well I see one of them sitting there loose at about 2 o’clock on your picture of the back of the freehub. I think those are both problems. You need to find that adapter, and if you can’t get the freehub reassembled with the pawls then you need it replaced.

I had my Kickr Core before I bought the Zwift Ride frame. I still have this cog lying around. Could I use it as a replacement?

Yes! The cog can also be separated from the freehub if needed. That requires some tools - a chain whip and a lockring tool. So don’t throw away the one with the bad freehub. Just bag it up for later. This work is also quick and easy for any bike shop.

The problem is that it doesn’t fit. The cog is far too loose and I don’t see any way to secure it. I find the Zwift manuals particularly unclear.

Can you show me the back side of the spare cog?

The new one is not mounted on a freehub. That clear plastic tube in the middle is a piece of packing material that holds it together before you install it on a freehub. So you need a freehub from somewhere. Did you previously have a cassette on this trainer that you pulled off with a freehub still attached? If so you could use that with the new cog. If not then you should contact support and tell them that the freehub fell apart when you were setting up your new Ride, see if they want to send you one.

I did not have a cassette. Any idea is I can buy a freehub somewhere?

You can get it from Wahoo: https://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/indoor-cycling/parts-components/shimano-freehub-buy

But you should contact Zwift support because they have a compatible one and they might give it to you.

Thanks a lot for your support Paul. It was a great help. I’ll contact Zwift support.

Looks like the old cog still has the freehub attached to it. You should be able to move it from the old one to the new one.

Except that three of the four pawls are missing

So it seems that the conclusion from Paul’s detective work is that the original problem of the chain coming off was likely caused by the freehub pawls getting messed up.

Then the freehub ended up locking up.

So there’s a broken freehub and a new one is needed, then the OP should be fine and might as well use the new Zwift Cog because of its fine-tuning ability (to reduce noise).

Hopefully I’ve got that summary right.

That was my first idea too, but there is no way to get the freehub separated from the old one. I need a new one anyway because of the missing pawls.

I need one as soon as possible, so what should I pay attention to when ordering one online?
