Zwift on PC Crashing after latest Update

Hi, I carried out Vivian’s recommendations and left video screenshots on and it crashed again as usual. I turned them off and then it didn’t crash so I think it is video screenshots. I’ve got two similar laptops and it is only on one that it crashes - I really don’t get it! I also emailed Zwift support yet and they advised that video screenshots aren’t officially supported in windows yet so best to turn off until they are. I find it so odd that they work fine on an almost identical laptop however. I might try a reinstall on zwift and see what happens. If anyone gets anywhere on the video screenshots, I would like to hear it. It’s quite a good feature if it’s a last minute sprint!

@evan-zwift is this true? If so why enable video screenshots by default? It would mean an unsupported setup is silently enabled for everyone with certain equipment types which seems like an odd choice.

This is incorrect and is likely just a misstatement.

@Peter_Burton Thanks for raising this issue with crashes you’re experiencing, and sorry to hear about the problem. I did a quick review of our crash reporting system and it doesn’t look like your crashes are showing up for some reason, which may mean the crash is occurring in a way that Zwift isn’t able to capture it (this can sometimes happen with crashes due to graphic card driver issues, system issues, etc. - to be clear, it may still be very relevant to Zwift, but the crash occurred in a way where Zwift’s application isn’t able to see it).

If you have another crash in the future, there are two things that would be helpful if you’re up for it:

1 - Save a copy of your most recent game log (how to find your game logs) to a safe location (they’ll get automatically cleaned up over time otherwise)

2 - Grab your Windows system crash logs (instructions here) and also save those to a safe location - this will grab any potential issues from the Windows system event viewer, which will hopefully help us fill in the gaps as to why we’re not seeing your crash in Zwift’s crash reporting system.

Peter, thank you for this clarification. As you’re aware the PC crashing issue first reared it’s head with Update 1.48 but also the point Video Screenshots were possible on PC sessions. I’ve switched off the Video Screenshots, which is a shame but something I can easily live with, as that seems to have stopped the session crash issue. However, there are two issues complicating things here, I’m still getting a black screen every so often (but this does not then lead to a complete crash of the session as it did previously after a black screen) which is mildly annoying but not an issue because the screen comes back after about 5 seconds or so with no outright crash.

Hi Evan, thanks for this. The feedback I got was as follows:

Windows is not officially supported for Video Replays yet, so it’s possible that this is the cause of the crashes and disabling them will resolve the issue until they are properly supported.

I have had a few instances of crashes but often not just crashes perhaps just everyone disappearing in the race, screen going black, sometimes it freezing, items disconnecting power, cadence etc. What was consistent is that it always freezes at the end of the ride ie closing the ride down.

As per Andrew below, most, if not all of my problems have disappeared with the removal of video screenshots; I can even exit the game without it crashing. My laptop spec is as follows, it’s not terribly old so I’d be surprised if it can’t cope. I’ve reinstalled so many times too I don’t think that’s the problem. For now I’ve just disabled that feature but it would be good to turn it back on if anyone works out what the problem is.

If I do get a crash, I’ll definitely follow your tips - thank you.

I should clarify, even though it freezes at end of the ride it does still save the ride if that helps…

Spec below - it should be able to do video screenshots?

|Processor|AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics 2.10 GHz|
|Installed RAM|8.00 GB (7.33 GB usable)|
|Device ID|141AD963-7938-4475-B42F-F002569C0DE1|
|Product ID|00342-20774-73449-AAOEM|
|System type|64-bit operating system, x64-based processor|
|Pen and touch|Pen and touch support with 10 touch points|

Pretty much the same as you Andrew, turning off video screenshots resolves most issues. I do like it as a feature though so I’d like to turn it back on if we ever get to the bottom of it!

hi
im having a similar issue, but it is crashing on loading screen when i choose a ride , windows 11 and zwift is up to date

My screen also freezes. Running windows 11.
I turned off the video capture option this morning and restarted. 40mins into the group ride - it froze.
So the Graphics freeze but I can still hear the “game” as per usual.
Also my companion app is still working and I can send and receive messages via the app on iPhone10

This has been an issue since the 1.48 update to Zwift. Switching off Video Screenshots helps but is not the complete answer. Following many attempts to resolve this I’ve concluded that Zwift now requires a faster and more capable Graphics card as lower standard cards that come with older PC/non-Gaming PC’s appear to overheat. Zwiftalizer, see Zwift Insider to more details, has helped me test various configurations which has been most illuminating. The only way to resolve this completely is to install a higher end Graphics Card or convert to running Zwift on a IOS device (I now Zwift on an Apple Mac Mini M2 which also has the benefit that Video Screenshots are, we’re told, designed for IOS operating systems, and work seamlessly for me now.) Mac Mini (not Apple TV) because you can use up to 7 Blue Tooth (BLE) device connections. Zwiftalizer research has also found that the latest BLE version (5.3) is far mre stable than Ant+ (I can concure that appears to be the case.)

Hi my zwift is crashing after the latest update this evening. Is anyone else having issues?
Pc set up.

No widespread reports of it and no changes in this release that would affect stability.

When you say it’s crashing, what’s actually happening?

HI @Adam_Currie_KWCC. Thanks for sharing your concern with us. This is Juan from Zwift. I comprehend how discouraging it is for you to experience a crash after updating the game version. Let’s bring you back on track.

There are several reasons why you could be experience crash such as; local device configuration, not meeting the requirements to run Zwift (device specs), and outdated graphic drivers. Id’ like to recommend you check out this article to rule out the scenarios listed there and isolate the cause.

If after trying the troubleshooting the issue persists, I encourage you to contact our support colleagues. I would be great if you send us the crash report, as well as your game logs, so we can look into them.

If you aren’t sure how to do that, check out this article for steps on sending your crash logs and this article for steps on sending your game logs.

We will be happy to continue assisting you.

Potentially a hardware issue then… in bed now will investigate tomorrow

Thanks Juan will look into it tomorrow after work x👍🏽

What are the system specs? Which CPU, which GPU, how much memory? Adequate free storage?
