I have tried this on two setups and both are having the same issue with the latest 1.97.2 and also on 1.96
My main setup is a Win 11:
Ryzen 5
50gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 4060 (latest nvidia drivers but have tried the previous version aswell)
NVMe disk (fast)
The other setup is a MacBook Pro M2 Silicon CPU/GPU
Both computers freezes zwift for a couple of seconds sometimes, it then resumes but during this period everything freezes. I am running both versions in fullscreen, at first I did window mode but thought it might be an issue. I think this started for me at 1.9x …. not sure but I have only had it for a couple of releases.
My internet is flawless with 250gbit so that should not be an issue.
I did not have this on my apple tv 4k thou… but that was also an earlier version of zwift.. but still 1.9x
Any suggestions and do more people have this issue ?
I haven’t heard that reported (at least not from people with hardware that nice) but one thing to try would be disable video screenshots and see if that’s related.
Sounds strange, my setup isn’t even half that good but I have no problems at all but then I’m on Windows 10 still, my 10 year old PC that is dedicated to Zwift only cannot handle Windows 11. My GPU doesn’t even make the list of recommended ones, it fell off the bottom some time ago but it works great.
Well i did not have it in previous versions. Like i said i have it both on my apple macbook pro m2 and The pc. And my pc have a wired connection with 250gbit fiber.
Ghost in the machine, The companion App used to freeze totally on the map screen for me, but just lately it is behaving itself on the updated version. With so many Windows updates, GPU driver updates, Zwift updates and Companion App updates, its a wonder it works at all. The whole thing might even improve when Windows 10 support ends, sick of the constant updates to be honest.
Something came to me that might be a problem but I am not sure.
On my Win 11 machine I use 2160 4K resolution in the game (FREEZES)
On my Macbook Pro M2 I use 2160 4K resolution in the game (FREEZES)
On my Apple TV 4K I use 1080P resolution in the game (DOES NOT FREEZE)
My TV is only 1080P 60hz. So might it be a scaling thing or refresh rate problem so that the picture freezes ?
Try lowering game resolution on the PC/Mac and see if it behaves differently. Lately I have been running Zwift on the 4K setting on a 1440p display (Windows PC) and haven’t seen any issues, other than occasional frame rate drops in dust clouds.
Thanks for the advice, i have updated the graphics drivers to the lastest as of today with a clean install. If that dont work i will try your advice. Maybe even 1080P.
The hardware should handle it with ease. Ive seen when running in window mode and also watching youtube in chrome the gpu uses about 60% and the cpu 50%. Should not have those lags
Zwift will load a single core of your CPU, so you need to be looking at the utilization of each core, not the CPU as a whole. Most of the CPU will always be unused by Zwift. Your low GPU utilization may be a sign that you are CPU bound. If you upload a log file to zwiftalizer.com it will show you the frame rates, which you can compare before/after making resolution changes.
That does not show you whether a single core is excessively busy. In Task Manager, on the Performance tab, you can right-click on the graph and change the view to Logical Processors. Then you can see if any one of them is highly utilized. The overall view of your CPU is not useful when you are trying to understand if Zwift is CPU bound because it won’t use the entire CPU.
Its a bit high on one core. Might be a peak that utilizes 100%… If and Apple TV 4K can do It this PC “should” be able to. But I could try 1440p and also 1080p.
A Ryzen 5 5600 CPU might be a cost-effective upgrade for that machine.
BTW none of this discussion explains why the Mac is freezing.
I still think you should be uploading logs from PC and Mac to zwiftalizer.com to understand your frame rates. On the PC I suspect you will see some low results when it is busy.
Same TV here but the GPU knows exactly what its connected to so its running 1080p and 59Hz refresh rate. Plenty good enough on a smaller TV, hi res is a waste of time until you get to like a 50inch. No point trying to run higher res settings in Zwift just stick to 1080p.
Mine does this as well, PC with windows 11. It generally does this when windows is downloading an update or similar. Tends to do it about 15 mins after logging on, screen freezes for a few seconds then ok for a few seconds, then freezes again and repeats…….does this for maybe 30 to 60 seconds and then all good for the rest of the ride.
That sounds about right. For me it usually also happens after a while of cycling. I would say between 10-30 minutes. It usually does it once every ride.
And like I said both on Mac and Windows so its not only on Windows. But I think I have never had it on the Apple TV 4K, maybe sometime long ago but barely remember.
