Zwift App Slow to Launch MacOS Catalina

I run ZwiftApp on a MAC with Catalina 10.15.7. Since your last game update the App goes into long periods of not responding. If I wait long enough it sometimes gets there. After choosing the course the map takes a long time to load (again long periods of “Not Responding”). Sometimes it loads, sometimes I have to force quit and relaunch. I have followed “ “Support” advice to clear my computer of zwift files, download again and re-install. Access to the files in Documents is not an issue. The same issues persist. I had 3 weeks of persisting but today was the worst I’ve encountered and could not get to a course. I’ve re-installed again (following all instructions) to no avail. Is anyone currently working to fix this or provide a workaround or should I suspend my membership!

Hi @Michael_Seddon

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. I looked at your server logs and it appears that you have a 2013 iMac with the 27" screen, is that correct?

Would you say that this has been a slow performance decline that’s come to a head recently? If yes - chances are that your ~10 year old hard drive can use a little TLC. The spinning platter-type drives like yours will get fragmented over time, and this will cause it run poorly in general (not just while Zwifting) I’d recommend you try defragmenting the drive. Instructions are on Apple’s support site

While you’re at it, I’d also check to see how much free space you have on that hard drive. If the drive has less than 10% free space, that’ll also hurt performance. Purging the cache will free up some space. Instructions are here.

If you’re inclined to stretch out the service life of that computer with a solid state hard drive, you should know SSD’s improve performance a LOT vs a spinning platter drive. If you go this route, I’d also recommend seeing if you can add more than RAM than the 8 GB that were installed at the factory. Some computers have upgradeable memory sticks, while others use sticks that are soldered to the motherboard and can’t be upgraded, and I’m not sure which is the case with yours. You may want to check with the Apple support folks to find out.

Thank you. You are correct that I’m having performance issues. I will apply that TLC you recommend.
