What's going on with ZwiftPower?

If I would be a company I would love customers „demanding“ things from me instead of just leaving.

Thought this was a little amusing - not the first time in past few days either …

This is nothing new. Seen these on and off for months if not years now.

As we all have, but amusing given the timing … or not !

Of course the difference now is the former developer of ZwiftPower can not fix it; we are now relying on Zwift to do that.

Since I can’t upload pictures just imagine a burning Elmo gif here.

However this plays out - Thanks for everything you, James and Glen did for the community. A lot of guys, myself included, basically play Zwiftpower with Zwift being only the graphics engine so to speak.

I would also like to add my thanks to the ZwiftPower team. I nearly cancelled Zwift after my first year. Then I joined a race and shortly thereafter I was on ZwiftPower. ZP became an addiction and the data is great for a numbers guy like me. I wanted to see how high of a ranking I could get.

Couple years later and I am still on Zwift and still can’t wait to see the “real” results on ZP after every race.

Very big thank you

So Zwift have provided a statement on all this to Zwift Insider.

They obviously couldn’t be arsed telling people here, so I’ll copy it over:

Better than nothing I suppose. Still waiting to find out what the plans are.

@Dave_ZPCMR where was this posted though?

Is that the only place it’s been posted?

Correct.

Yep, confirmed by Eric at ZwiftInsider that it was an email directly to him after he reached out asking for clarification.

@shooj we have been watching this thread waiting for an update or your announcement since Friday. What happened? Instead we got another third party community site providing the things the community is asking for.

I like theses two sentences:

During the last 2 months, we have been preparing to migrate ZwiftPower to our own AWS servers to help provide more product stability, especially for larger events such as the Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France taking place now.

Followed by

We expect to cutover to these new servers during the next month.

So the reason they are moving the service is for the Virtual L’Etape du Tour de France, which will have finished before the move takes place.

Zwift’s official answer…We bought it.

Not really, they had an agreement in place since 2018 so it was a matter of when, not if they would take it over. Is it safe to call this an official statement because I don’t think it is. This is not straight from the horse’s mouth unless Eric is a Zwift employee/spokesperson and it seemed like Eric had to ask Zwift to get this information. So, again, we’re still waiting on what @shooj noted about a forthcoming statement “shortly” (it’s been ~4 days now).

Everyone, here’s Zwift’s statement in full that we shared with Zwift Insider earlier today. Sorry for the lag in getting this to you.

Some of your questions about the near-future steps for ZwiftPower are addressed below. The longer-term changes are about making ZwiftPower even better as a result of integration of those functions within Zwift.

As far as the ZwiftPower forums: we’re frankly still working out a transition plan. If you would like to give us your input about the existing ZP forum, we’d love to hear your feedback on how to improve that too. As a forum manager, I recognize that it’s the people in the forum that drive its value to the community, so we’d like to hear from those of you who know and love it.

Zwift has been providing financial support to ZwiftPower for some time, as part of our commitment to investing in tools that support community racing on the platform. Created as a not-for-profit tool by James Hodges and Glen Knight, Zwift Power has helped to empower our community to pioneer new event formats and racing on the platform.

With significant support from Dave Ranson, James and Glen have continued to work on Zwift Power to this date, helping with the transition over to Zwift. During the last 2 months, we have been preparing to migrate Zwift Power to our own AWS servers to help provide more product stability, especially for larger events such as the Virtual l’Etape du tour de France taking place now. We expect to cutover to these new servers during the next month.

The future vision is to create a more seamless experience between ZwiftPower and Zwift as we continue our focus on becoming the definitive racing experience for cyclists around the world. This includes a focus on the connection of the Zwift and ZwiftPower accounts as well as supporting teams, leagues and categorization with the framework that James and Glen have worked so hard to build and maintain for the community.

Though Zwift has taken ownership of Zwift Power, it will always remain a legacy of James and Glen. For that Zwift and the Zwift community will always be grateful.

How will Zwift handle Sandbagging?
Our goal is to make ongoing improvements to make competition on Zwift fun and fair. In addition to the testing of live flagging in Zwift HQ Beta Races, we are also exploring messaging at event sign up to guide Zwifters to the appropriate race category. The long term vision is a categorization system based on the Zwifter’s historical performance.

Does this mean Zwift Power results will be integrated within the game, Zwift.com and Zwift Companion app?
We are exploring how Zwift Power results might be integrated into the game, Zwift Companion and Zwift.com.

Why didn’t Zwift create Zwift Power from the start?
Zwift was originally developed as a training platform that connects athletes from around the world. Racing on Zwift is something that was really born out of the community. Zwift Power, just like Zwift racing, is something born from the community.

Why do we have to learn about these things in forums, rather than from Zwift?
Zwift has been financially supporting Zwift Power for some time. At this point in time, very little has changed. We look forward to telling the community about exciting new improvements when they have been fully tested and rolled out.

It looks to me that something fabulous could come out of this - my take of this one short sentence is that the days of the ABCD categories based on w/kg are numbered. That will be a great day if it happens, and is implemented in a way that forces people into races with people of similar ability. Racing will take off, Zwift will benefit and zwifters will have more fun…

They said the reason is “for larger events such as…”, not “for the Virtual L’Etape”. They give a current example for those folks that might not know what “larger event” means. Also, there will likely be another Virtual L’Etape in 2021.
