New user here to Zwift, coming from the Wahoo Ecosystem. I have my Kickr Smart Trainer, cadence, power, and zwift click all paired via BT. I’ve looked everywhere and cannot find the virtual shifting option anywhere. The click works in ERG mode to move the percentage up/down, when ERG is off I have no option for virtual shifting. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled everything, all the firmware is up to date. Has anyone seen or had this issue and if so is there a solution?
Shuji at Zwift HQ here. I wanted to confirm - your server logs indicate that you’re using a KICKR v5, which can not be updated to support virtual shifting. Sorry to disappoint you - but the KICKR v5 was discontinued before Zwift Virtual Shifting was conceived, and doesn’t have enough onboard memory to run the required firmware.
V5 user here. I’m just curious, what’s the Kickr v5 memory size (in MB, or is it KB?) and what was the jump in firmware size when virtual shifting was introduced? I’m a software engineer myself and can’t get my head around how is it possible that a device released in 2020 for 1000$ doesn’t have enough memory. That is just ridiculous.
@shooj how on earth is it possible that a device released in 2020 (kickr v5) does not support virtual shifting. But a kickr core (the lesser of the kickr), released in 2018, does support virtual shifting. Can you provide any insights? Cause I’m not following.
A perfectly working kickr v5 shouldn’t be discarded to get virtual shifting. Save the planet we share!
Wahoo said it is a memory issue, the V5 doesn’t have enough onboard memory to handle the update required for virtual shifting, this has nothing to do with Zwift.
@Mike_Rowe1 That’s bs, how can the kickr v5 have less memory than the kickr core, which was 2 years older?
kickr v5 has direct connect (wired), supports race mode,…, the only catch, how can we give users a reason to buy a kickr v6?
The kickr v6 was released (sept 2022). When zwift virtual shifting was released (oct 2023), they said it would support the kickr v5. Except, if they support the kickr v5, there wasn’t a reason to get a kickr v6 if you had a kickr v5. To bump sales of the kickr v6, they just decided to give this as a reason. I call the memory excuse bs…
Remember that wahoo sued Zwift for the ‘Zwift hub one’ in sept 2022 for patent infringement. Zwift was eating in the same, lower market segment as the KICKR Core. Suddenly they dropped that in sept 2023, just when the release was happening for the Zwift virtual shifting. If you connect the dots, they just made a deal, shortly after, the Zwift hub one was removed and the KICKR Core was marketed as ‘KICKR CORE Zwift One’.
Next to that, Wahoo experienced severe financial difficulties, leading to a debt crisis in early 2023,
