This Season on Zwift [December 2022]

Great to hear that there is going to be a new world, and not only that, but my home country too.

What also delights me, is the fact, when a forum was posted a couple of years ago, asking what next we would like to see from the developers, I said that I would love to see a Scotland based world, seeing that we would be hosting the UCI 2023 World Championships. My request has been answered. Thanks Zwift.

Looking forward to seeing what you have planned, hopefully some of our lovely scenery, lochs and mountains, castles, hairy coo’s, (highland cows), maybe a wee nessie, hiding in a loch?

P.s. also looking forward to the actual event too, as the ladies road race start is 10 miles from my house, so will be popping over to watch.

I know it won’t happen but join the UK courses together would make a pretty interesting world especially with the upcoming Scotland course.

I like London, it has a nice mix of hilly bits and flat bits, I rarely ride yorkshire as it is too up and down for my liking but if i could get to it from somewhere else then i’d be more tempted.

I like the idea of different places, but hate that you need to pick just one and stay there until your ride is over.

I just submitted a feature request to “connect” the separate worlds. We could still have these separate places that all feel a bit different, but would be able to “jump” from one place to another, all in the same ride. Not sure if it’ll get any traction, but thought it would be cool:

EDIT: I guess I didn’t look hard enough; it’s been asked before:

That requst has been around for a while, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Part of the reason it is not done is because all the worlds provide a real world GPS trail which is overlaid on the maps on Garmin Connect, Strava and others. Jumping from the central park New York to Box Hill would generate distinct sections to the route map, separated by thousands of miles and based on a conversation with a Strava CS rep a few years ago, that wouldn’t be acceptable to them for routes posted to the site.

As usual, the main problem is that these questions are asked (sometimes repeatedly) and Zwift is never prepared to provide an answer or even any background info as to why things are the way they are.

If they can link the worlds then, for me, they definitely should. If not, they should be prepared to say so, and explain why.

I think the problem is the size of the map, lower end devices wont be able to load maps of that size. At some point it was said that that also limited the amount of kits in game.
We are limited by the lower end devices.

All of the worlds would need to be loaded simultaneously. If this increased loading times there would be complaints.

Zwift would have to rewrite the code to enable a world change during a ride. If this wasn’t instantaneous there would be complaints.

And there’s the whole GPS /Strava / Connect problem…

Well, you could just have a stretch of generic tunnel (no U-turns) to show while the world is reloaded… The GPS/Strava problem can be solved easily if there is a will, but of course it is a convenient excuse.

I think this is a bit of an excuse really, they combine real and made up parts of worlds, the alpe in watopia, VennTop in france, Surrey hills in london
Just do something similar to that.

They could just move all worlds to the middle of the ocean and that would be fine, but if they move the maps all STRAVA segments will reset, imagine the complaining if that happen.

Sure, but those made-up sections already exist and there are Segments based on the virtual coordinates. Joining Richmond to New York (for example) would either require one of those locations to be virtually relocated or there would be a sudden straight-line teleportation between the two.

I’d rather we jump to hyperspace. Star Wars Deron GIF - Star Wars Deron Hyperspace - Discover ...

Other riders would see you jump in and out. Star Wars Rogue One GIF - Star Wars Rogue One Star Destroyer - Discover & Share GIFs

What would be your solution?

Use the distance info in the .fit file to detect these jumps or just coordinate with Strava to figure out which specific jumps between two coordinates should be disregarded, certainly the Zwift user base is big enough to make platform-specific hacks a reasonable thing to do. Or a generic “no supersonic travel” rule would do nicely as well…

Of course, I have zero expectation of any of this ever happening at either end.

The easiest is to move the maps next to each other and reset all Stava achievements. This will need tunnels so that the new map can be loaded.

will this happen? I don’t think so. Most of Zwift users ride less than 60min per session (I would guess less than 30 minutes) so having a large map won’t be of interest to most riders as they wont be able to ride from one map to the other.

Yeah, adding more roads to some of the bigger reality-based worlds (London and NYC) to give more route/freeride options there would be my preference.

UK version

If the existing worlds can’t be joined it makes no sense to introduce new stand alone worlds, all new roads should be an addition to an existing world. Or the problem will just increase over time.

Except if current worlds are already at maximum size for lower end devices.

I think we’re a long way off all worlds being at capacity!
Paris could probably have a watopia sized expansion and be fine.

I don’t see why. If (as Gerrie says) the majority of Zwift users stick to sessions of less than an hour, then a variety of worlds with at least one 15-20km route adds variety for all those users. The issue then is that all the worlds need to be available at all times to give a free choice of routes … for me, that would be the preferred plan A.
