To get the route badge you must complete the entire route as one ride. That being said, I believe it is still possible to start the ride, and then get off and do whatever you want WITHOUT ending the ride, and then come back later to continue on. It would record the entire duration of the ride (so it might end up looking REALLY long), but I think that’s the only way to break it up.
