Results vs position and visuals

Hi all,

disclaimer: I’m relatively new to racing and not a native speaker. I’ve looked through this forum but haven’t found what I’m looking for, yet. Apologies if this is a duplicate.

Recently, I was in a race (lots of fun!) where a video was uploaded afterwards and I noticed a discrepancy between what was visible “on the road” and in the “current position” and simply would like to understand more of the underlying mechanics out of curiosity.

Here are two successive frames from the video. In the first frame, the rider in second place is listed at position 3/27.
In the following frame, the position jumps to 1/27 while there is still a rider ahead.
However, notice that the list of riders matches what’s shown on the road.

Just 34 meters later, when the riders are crossing the finish line (0m), the riders are shown in the same order. Again, successive frames from the video.

The race resulted in N. De Rocker (the stronger sprinter! :flexed_biceps:) winning with 3 milliseconds ahead of T. Strazny. :rocket::raising_hands:

I can only guess that there must be some delay or difference between the visuals of what happend on the road and how the server came to the results. Of course, I would like to rely on what the game shows me when I’m deep in the red sprinting for the finish line.

Does anyone know what might have happened for the results and the live positions and visuals not matching?

Thanks in advance!
Tim

Your position number can be all over the place, you can never really rely on that. What you see on screen is not necessarily what anyone else sees either. I’ve won a race by over 10 metres before and ended up 2nd in the results! It’s just Zwift I’m afraid. In a sprint finish you just have to go as hard as you can all the way to the line and hope for the best.

Also keep in mind that network latency or packet loss can cause strange things to appear on screen. You might see yourself ahead of a rider and they might see the opposite.

And never trust the time gap numbers.

And trust the position shown at the top of the nearby riders list even less. They have always been all kinds of wrong, including that they are updated at a different time than the list of riders itself, but my feeling from recent events has been that it is even more all over the place than before.
