Replacing my derailleur with a chain tensioner on Zwift Cog?

Hi, I’d like to replace my existing derailleur with a simple, cheap chain tensioner for use exclusively on the trainer with the Zwift Cog. Am wondering about compatibility and if anyone has any tips…

Current drivechain is 1x8:

  • SRAM X4 rear derailleur
  • SRAM 8-speed chain
  • SRAM 32T front chainring

…this works fine on the Zwift Cog in a middle gear on the 8 speed shifter.

My trainer is the first generation Zwift Hub.

Can I replace the rear derailleur with something like?

  • BLB Single Speed Chain Tensioner
  • Shimano Alfine CT-S500

(sorry, forum permissions don’t let me post links)

My preference would be Shimano part, but its datasheet says that it’s only compatible with cogs between 18 and 20 teeth (and the standard Zwift Cog that I have has 14T, apparently). On the other hand, the BLB doesn’t even state any chain or cog requirements, so it would be a shot in the dark.

Happy to hear anyone’s experience or recommendations!

Thanks!

Why unless you need the derailleur?

It’s for a project.
