I have an alu Triban RC100 that I only want to use indoors. Before I put it on the trainer (with Zwift Cog) I want to replace the chain first. What is actually the best chain for a Zwift Cog? The chain that is on it now makes quite a bit of noise under pressure. What would be the best and quietest chain, weight or 10/11/12 speed doesn’t matter imho because you don’t have to shift anyway.
Hello @Mrtn
Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Putting a fresh chain on your bike is a good idea so both the chain and the Zwift cog start out with zero wear.
The Triban RC100 uses a 7 speed drivetrain, so you should buy a chain for this specification.
Do not buy a chain meant for 10-11-12 speed cassettes. The chain would be too narrow to shift well when you use the bike outdoors.
Every chain manufacturer will make a 3/32" width chain appropriate for a 7 speed bicycle. This one is the one Shimano makes for 6-7-8 speed drivetrains. Other brands will too.
I will never use the bike outside anymore so shifting is also not necessary anymore. That is why I am looking for the most silent chain that fits well with the Cog.
Understood, thanks for the extra context. Your chain still has to work well with the front chainring(s) of your bike. The inside-to-inside gap in a chain gets narrower from 9 > 10 > 11 speeds, and it may not fit over the chainring teeth with enough clearance and might generate noise because of that.
Recommendation is still to go with an 8 speed chain for your Triban, unless you’re willing to experiment and eat the cost if it doesn’t work out.
