New(ish) to Zwift, used it before with a Mac laptop sitting nearby my trainer.
Now I’m working out how I can use a 30" Cinema Display in front of my trainer with an iPad mounted on my handlebar. Problem being USB cabling’s not working!
Fine if I connect iPad directly to USB>monitor adapter but if I put another, longer cable between the two there’s no signal reaching my monitor.
One thing I’ve worked out is with my iPhone (15 Pro) and my newer M3 MacBook Pro I can ‘mirror’ my iPhone (thanks be to Apple for making this possible with their latest OS release!) on my MacBook. With the latter connected to the monitor adapter directly I can get almost a full Zwift screen view as wide as the 30’ will display, use the iPhone on handlebar for controls.
If cabling length’s an issue has anyone succeeded using a powered USB hub between tablet/phone and monitor to get a workable display going?
Hi @SP_Clark
Shuji at Zwift HQ here. In short: don’t. Logging into the same account from two devices at the same time causes all sorts of issues you can easily avoid.
A long video cable length adds its own issues as you’re aware. If your preferred device is a tablet, there are trays that attach to your handlebar and you can lay your table on that. Here’s an example. There are many others you can google which clamp onto the bars, or onto a out-front computer mount if you have one of those already.
Yeah, I figured as much, thanks for the confirmation.
My main goal is to have a large display well in front of my trainer-mounted bike, with tablet mounted just ahead of handlebar displaying what’s playing on the tablet.
I managed a stop-gap the other day with my iPhone on the bike and my MacBookPro ‘mirroring’ the iPhone’s screen display on the big monitor 8 feet in front. Problem being it’s a kludge and I can’t manage the iPhone tap screen whilst on the bike ‘cause of its small touchscreen.
I found a 10’ DVI male/male cable I think will allow me to leave out the laptop, use my iPad on the bike. Waiting for a female/female DVI adapter (due today) to complete the connection. We’ll see…
you probably want something like a thunderbolt 4 in > hdmi 2.1 out adapter or a docking station with that functionality. then you can run your device straight to the display. cable matters sell one in the UK for about 25 british dollars on amazon that seems to be reviewed well. thunderbolt docking stations can get quite expensive quite quickly, but usually do more advanced stuff like multiple outputs from one input (which might actually suit your case better). here is an example of a single purpose adapter though
this isnt a recommendation or an endorsement of the brand, i’ve never used their stuff, just an example
and, of course, a thunderbolt cable (if using a docking station instead) and a hdmi 2.1 cable. you can run a HDMI cable up to 10 meters with no problems, certainly 5 is no problem. pay attention to the cable specifications especially with docking stations because even though USB C ports all look the same, not every USB C cable is a thunderbolt cable or even capable of outputting video at all
and seek a second opinion, because i don’t actually zwift on that kind of setup of myself
