NPE RUNN is not what I hoped

I apologize for posting, but I am almost to the “demand a refund” zone with my NPE RUNN device. I know that it is supposed to work, but it doesn’t. I’ve read/followed the instructions on various tech threads, and I consider myself fairly tech savvy.

Some of the advice appears to get me closer, but the incline is stuck at a high angle and the speed wont read. The indicator lights clearly show that it is seeing the reflective tape. The ConfigureZ app works to connect, but that’s where I see the incline is messed up / and no speed is registering.

Overall, I think ZWIFT should remove this product from their site if it doesn’t work right out of the box without a lot of hand-holding and app balancing. I’m probably going to drop some money on the Garmin HR Pro strap as it appears to close the loop on what I need.

Cheers!

I have had great success with the RUNN.
I had to scrap the reflective stickers, since they would not stay adhered to my textured treadmill belt. I used some White-Out typewriter correction fluid and painted my own. White fingernail polish would probably work as well, but the White-Out was cheaper.
I also had to physically bolt the cradle to the side rail of the treadmill - once again, the supplied tape was not adhering to the plastic side rails. My treadmill is quite old, and it is out in my uninsulated workshop.
The ConfigureZ app allowed me to calibrate both speed and incline.
Is your RUNN fit straight and level in the cradle?

What worked for me was two stickers side by side and fooling with placement and most importantly at least in my case was distance from the belt. Best not to stick it down until one assures themself the unit is getting signals.

I also had to mess around with mine at first to get it level and close enough to the belt to properly read. I did add extra stickers. I agree, it was a little frustrating at first to get set up. The RUNN was sensitive enough to slow slightly with heel strike.

Good luck. It does work. I hope you find a solution for your particular situation.

I did have an issue once with my run. I had issues with the cadence and the incline not working properly if i remember correctly. I got in touch with Zwift and they suggested to open up the device and disconnect the battery for a few mins and reconnect you will need a small torx tho. Fixed my issue. If your willing to try that give it a go or get it touch with Zwift and see what they say.

The NPE RUNN can be pretty finicky, but once you get it set, it seems to work pretty well. I found that I pretty much had to have it in one specific position for it to read. It would blink periodically in other positions but would not read the pace unless it was in one exact position. One notch up or down on either side would break the connection. But, as long as it is in that one position, it doesn’t miss a beat. I do still have issues with incline, but I don’t really worry about that since I almost exclusively use it level. I really haven’t spent much effort trying to get the incline calibration set either, so it could just be that I haven’t calibrated it properly.

When you are trying to get it set, get it to a point where it seems to be seeing the markers. Then, set the treadmill at a decent pace (say 7-8mph) and let it run. Sit there with the configuration app running and see if it reads the speed. If not, make adjustments to the sensor position one notch at a time. Adjust one notch, let it run for a number of cycles of the belt and see if it reads, if not, adjust one notch up or down. Also try inward and outwards adjustments. Once you get it set, mark those points so you can easily get it back there in the future if/when it gets bumped.

Everything I have done so far indicates that it should be working. The device blinks to show it is reading the strips. The signal strength is high. The device connects to the ConfigureZ app, but never shows speed. It worked once (momentarily) with Zwift, then stopped working. The incline is somewhere around 48%, but my treadmill is perfectly flat. I know it’s not the installation, but something is off with the device.

I honestly think that Zwift is a good company, and contacting NPE may be my next step in the troubleshooting process. I am guessing I might have to do the ‘mysterious’ battery disconnect thing, because I currently have a brick that does nothing for me at present time.

I would almost prefer a refund at this point. There are so many better plug-and-play devices out there. Having to stand on one foot, hold my breath and press a button is a bit much.
