Kurt Kinetic InRide 1 - sudden erratic readings

I have been using a Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer with the Inride 1 addon, connecting to an ipad via bluetooth, for about 7 years. I have been using it about twice a week since last august, and it has been working great.

Suddenly this week, the wattage readings are erratic

  • I use instant power not 3s average, since this gives me better control.
  • I tried a fresh battery
  • I removed the device from Zwift and repaired it.

Any other thoughts? The only other thing that strikes me is that my ipad said today that it updated. I hope something didn’t break on the BT layer. Thanks!

edit -

  • I checked the new battery with a tester and it reads 3.15v, which should be fine.
  • The erratic swings are often increase in wattage. E.g., cruising at 180w suddenly it jumps to 250, 260, then 220, then back to 180. I’m experienced to know that I’m being fairly consistent and this isn’t me.

Hi @James_Young, welcome to the forums! I’m Francisco from Zwift Support.

That definitely sounds frustrating, especially when your setup has been working flawlessly for so long!

I took a look at your account and noticed a few Bluetooth (BLE) disconnection and reconnection issues from your devices on April 28th, which might be contributing to the issues. Since there was a recent update from your side.

A few things to try:

  • Make sure your trainer and iPad are close enough to minimize interference.
  • Check out this article: (BLE and ANT+ Interference Troubleshooting Tips) for tips on reducing connectivity issues.
  • Try testing your setup on another app to see if the issue persists.
  • Reach out to the trainer’s manufacturer for additional troubleshooting steps specific to your model.

Let us know how it goes.

Not related to your problem, but FYI changing between instant and 3s avg power only changes what you see on the HUD. It does not change the rate at which power is recorded by the game, so the responsiveness of your avatar remains the same either way.

Thanks, that’s helpful. I am about 1.7m and this has been always the distance so I’m hopeful that that isn’t the problem. I will check the ipad settings and apple forums about any recent bluetooth changes. Also, in zwift it shows a very strong signal.

Knowing that my account showed BLE Dropouts is helpful but unfortunate. I will try many of the things on the link you provided, and see how it goes.

Unfortunately Kurt Kinetic is essentially defunct. I managed to get their app re-installed and yesterday did a new spindown calibration - the web says this may somehow re-set or fix the unit if it’s having some issues Internally. I hope that fixes it. I will report back, thanks again.

That’s good to know. I mostly need it for the intervals, e.g., hitting a target with cadence and power on a 10s or 30s interval is really tricky with the 3s on!
