Hub update 5 can’t see Garmin speed anymore

The .fit files that make their way to Garmin Connect from Zwift should show power as recorded by Zwift. Mine certainly do.

The reason lots of people ‘dual’ record is (speaking for me anyway) I wear my watch 24/7 for health metrics such as sleep, HRV status and body battery.

By recording the ride on the Garmin and NOT using the Zwift upload it maintains acurate health metrics whereas using Zwift upload direct to Garmin Connect bypasses the watch and can skew the daily feed. There are workarounds but the easiest option is to just to dual record.

Also broadcast heart rate from the watch only works in non trainer mode as explained previously so now having to wear a chest strap which is a shame when it’s right there on my wrist.

Thanks for your input though it may help others not aware of the power upload but I fear it’s the getout for Zwift where they say no need to use your Garmin we do it all :frowning:

Yeah - I wear my Fenix 6 24/7 for the same reason. Things did improve when Garmin started to allow more of the training effect data to be counted (was that last year?) However, I’ve also found that it’s not good at picking up changes to HR when doing the likes of interval training (it’s just too laggy) and choose to wear a chest HRM (even when running) for these instances.

Possibly dropped dropped support for good as part of the virtual shifting update.
From DCRaimakers Hub One review-

"With all that said, here’s the complete list of protocol transmission standards/types the Zwift Hub Supports:

ANT+ FE-C Control: This is for controlling the trainer via ANT+ from apps and head units, and includes power & cadence data. Read tons about it here.

ANT+ Power Meter Profile: This broadcasts as a standard ANT+ power meter, with cadence data baked in (but not speed data)

Bluetooth Smart FTMS: This is the industry standard for apps controlling the trainer via Bluetooth Smart, and includes ANT+ power and cadence baked in.

Bluetooth Smart Power Meter Profile: This broadcasts as a standard BLE power meter with cadence data.

Bluetooth Smart Heart Rate Profile: It passes this through from ANT+ & Bluetooth Smart HR straps.

It DOES NOT, however, support these protocols/transmissions (which trainers from Tacx and Elite do support):

ANT+ Speed/Cadence Profile: This broadcasts just your speed and cadence as a standard ANT+ Speed/Cadence combo sensor.

Bluetooth Smart Speed/Cadence Profile: This broadcasts just your speed and cadence as a standard BLE combo Speed/Cadence sensor."

Thanks Elena. Do you have a link to DC’s review?

I read and rate his reviews, they are very thorough. I’m wondering though was this pre or post V5 update?

Sorry found it, yes it’s the Hub One so just posted.

Cadence, Power and even speed are still there for me when I dual record with my forerunner 965. Fortunately the mentioned metrics are still accurate then for me. But the speed is completely different now with the Zwift Cog. I guess it’s because of the other type of shifting. On the small ring the speed is really slow (20 kph), on the big ring it is really fast (up to 50/55 kph when I‘m at 30/35 in Zwift). It was much more realistic and closer before even if it can’t be the same, but I think I have to deal with it as I don’t see a fix for that (except of editing the km manually in Garmin connect after the ride). Or does someone has an other fix?

I am facing exactly the same issues. Wondering about the speed recordings on my connected Garmin Edge 530. Would love to understand the problems or better see an solution on this.

Justin - Are you connected in ‘trainer’ mode?

This works and provides the data but you can’t then broadcast HR from the watch as mentioned above.

Also are you on v5 as v4 and below all worked fine.

Thanks for the answer. Does this affect the Zwift workout in any way? I don’t care that much about the numbers on the Garmin as I mainly ride in Zwift. I only dual record because of the metrics of my Garmin watch as some data gets lost if I just put the zwift workout into Garmin connect. So I start a virtual ride on my Garmin Watch and press start.

Software all the latest.

I used my modest Garmin Forerunner 45 to sync with my Zwift Hub as a Speed/Cadence sensor.

I also report that the Zwift Hub is no longer detected by my watch since the last update.

I have Garmin Forerunner 955 and it’s not showing any HR data (wrist not wrap) at all when connected to Zwift Hub. I have the latest firmware.

This is is very frustrating and annoying. Can’t recommend Zwift HUB for any Garmin users on it’s current state.

Zwift team, please fix this ASAP.

I’m just getting back to riding the Zwift Hub now that winter is coming. I hadn’t done anything all summer or fall. Thinking I should probably check for firmware upgrade, I did, without checking this forum first :slightly_frowning_face: I’m sorry. As everyone else reports, the Cadence/Speed option is not showing up on my Garmin Edge 830 any more, only Power. There has been so often when I inadvertently upgraded firmware when I would have been better off leaving things alone. Please, another request for restoring functionality that used to be there.

Still no developments about restoring connectivity with Garmin watches on the next Zwift Hub firmware?

No it has been completely ignored by Zwift.

We are now using a wahoo armband for heart rate (great recommendation from a poster above) and a chest strap for me.

Disappointed with Zwift response.

I still have the same issue (since original post). The odd thing is the speed and cadence match Zwift (closely enough) but the distance simply doesn’t record correctly. After a short 6 mile ride this morning (shown via Zwift) my Garmin 530 recorded 127 feet of distance.

I just installed the new update… and that didn’t resolve the issue either. I upgraded to the Zwift trainer (from a dumb trainer) to get more realistic experience and it ahs been very frustrating shelling out money for less functionality.

Was there any mention of a way to downgrade firmware back to version 4 so I can dual record again? Just setting up the trainer for the winter and did the 5 upgrade because why not newer should be better but as others have said completely broke communication with my Garmin watch.

Hello everyone,

Have any of you discovered a solution? I’ve observed that the Speed/Cadence sensor is no longer recognized as a sensor itself since the v5 update. However, this hasn’t affected me much since I use an HR strap and connect the smart trainer as a “Smart Trainer” in Garmin. This way, all the information is transmitted to Garmin, and I only need to ensure that I set the trainer option to “Free ride” in Garmin.

The problem arose when my strap became defective, and I had to use the wrist HR monitor from my Fenix 7 to record my heart rate. The issue is that when you connect the trainer as a “Smart Trainer” in the watch, the watch waits for HR data from the trainer, which won’t happen. As a result, I have no HR data during activities. Now I have to choose between an activity without HR or one without speed and distance, at least until I resolve my HR strap problem.

This is the reply I received yesterday from support after a few days of waiting. I really would just love to downgrade back to firmware v4 since I won’t ever be using any of the new controls. Unfortunately doesn’t look like that is possible. Hopefully a fix in current firmware happens at some point. Funny part is in my email I tagged this post yet they are still telling me to check out the forums so maybe that was a bot response. Who knows.

Hi all,

I had the same issue with a Garmin Fenix 6 and Zwift Hub. Speed/Cadence sensors were no longer available on the watch after the firmware update. Only the trainer option and selecting it prevents the watch to broadcast HR. I’ve bought a HRM strap and everything works perfectly but I would have preferred to have it like before. I had many back and forth with Zwift support and finally had the confirmation that it was a function that was disabled. See the answer received:
