I noticed that Zwift doesn’t seem to run my video card flat out like it did before.

Especially on the Home Screen. Something has changed for the better.

I’m using Mac Pro 5,1 32GB with RX580 Radeon and single 6 core X5690 CPU.

Note I was just watching other riders so no trainer connected (I’m injured).

That’s because you’re now CPU bound, as James referred to. That isn’t a good thing, it’s been like this for a few months now.

Edit: in fairness you’re on Mac, so I might be talking shite. They have been changing things behind the scenes on MacOS recently, dunno if it’s rolled out yet. But generally speaking it’s not bad to have a graphics card working hard, they should be working as hard as necessary/possible to hit your desired frame rate. On the Windows version of Zwift since the turn of the year, the graphics card is being excessively restricted by the CPU versus how it always used to be.

Doesn’t this show a major flaw in the Zwift 5 star rating system? While I can understand struggling with versus aero claims and benefits of equipment, I really struggle to understand how zwift struggles with weight issues for equipment that mirrors IRL equipment. While individual bits like the frame, forks, bar, stem, etc can take a little while to key in the individual weights, there are many things such as pedals and saddles that can use the same arbitrary weight, at least until zwift allows us to pick between those too.

Let’s used the Toa as an example:

“New Toa frame weight is claimed at 1105g (size M), plus 425g for an uncut fork, 135g for the seatpost, and 395g for the Mana bar+stem” - Bikerumor

“In terms of weight, all this new tech has added 35g to the groupset, but at a claimed 2,439g it’s still the lightest electronic disc groupset out there (SRAM’s top tier is 2,518g, Campagnolo’s 2,505g).” - Cyclist.co.uk

Frame: 1105g
Fork: 425g
Seatpost: 135g
Bar/stem: 395g
Shimano 92xx: 2439g
Now let’s ballpark some extras
Bottom bracket: 100g
Saddle: 200g
Bottle cages: 70g
Pedals: 225g (less if you pick Speedplay)
+
Wheels get their own breakdown but for an example of total bike weight:
Zipp 404: claimed 1526g
Skewers: 74g
Average nothing special tire: 275g x 2

That gives us a easy estimate of 7,224g or about 15.89 lbs for the total bike. I guess, I don’t understand what makes that so difficult until you have to force the continuous weight scales into an insufficient discrete, 1 through 5 scale.

The talk of metal compatibility is what had me wondering. Whatever happened, it runs better overall.

So it’s light but not that light. Seems like the weight ratings could do with a scale of 10, with 10 being best.

Glad you saw my edit. :+1: So you’re getting the same or better performance (in terms of frame rates) for lower GPU utilisation?

I’ve never seen this sort of optimisation in all my time using the software, so it would be rather bittersweet.

While the swelling in my hip is not so bad in the morning, I will go and use my other 5,1 Mac to test this more and if I can see anything else. It is almost identical except for 4x the RAM and dual X5690. I don’t expect any differences but who knows.

One further test I can run is on the other Mac with dual D700 6gb graphics cards and a single Xeon E5 12 core at 2.7ghz. Usually it is slower on Zwift in the old days for obvious reasons.

So far definitely running better.

On Windows the GPU utilisation is down, but so are frame rates. There’s too much CPU load (even in solo rides) and it’s holding the GPU back. Like you’re in a group ride all the time. Makuri has always been like this, but in 2022 it’s everywhere. :confused:

:100: Users should not need to consult a third party website to get a good idea of how frame/wheel performance compares. Every website you need to visit to understand how to use Zwift is effectively a missing feature.

On the other macs with the Amelia bot on “Bigger loop”.

Dual X5690 5,1 Mac Pro, RX580 with a 5K LG screen - same results, lower graphics card temp. 50-65fps depending on the area. Identical performance to the single X5690 Mac.

Xeon E5 2.7ghz 12 core, dual D700 6gb Firepro with a 4K screen: similar results but about 10fps less (as expected). Only one D700 is used, that’s normal. Similarly not running as hot as it used to.

So wondering if anything changed in the background. If not then I’m very surprised. Imagine if it were properly optimised… even with these old computers it would be great.

This is a great example of just part of the issue with bike performance attributes in Zwift. Why did this data come from Bikerumor instead of the manufacturer? Also the qualifier of “claimed” adds more vagueness to the actual weight of the bike.

Trust me, if every partner of every piece of equipment provided verifiable weights and aero values for them, we would use them. However, they do not.

This isn’t an excuse for me making mistakes in configurations or making poor judgment calls in the absence of actual data, it’s just a little behind the curtain peek to help illustrate that something that seems simple, may not in fact be all that simple.

I would say claimed is the bikerumor qualifier statement when manufacturer weight claims are concerned. They probably don’t trust the manufacturers claim until they’ve got the bike and weighed it themselves.

Even different paint schemes can change the weight of the frame set, particularly those classic Cannondale Super Six Evo Hi-Mod frames which were the favourites of the weight weenie crowd building sub 5kg bikes. The really light builds usually have the paint removed.

You really have to weigh the bikes and components yourself which would not be practical. Aero is another complexity.

Your passion for this issue is appreciated, I honestly wish all the 100+ bikes in the game had similar consistent and verifiable data, then my job would be a bit easier. :slightly_smiling_face: Sadly that’s not the situation and a single in-game bike cannot be tuned and balanced in a bubble.

For me, the core issue is less about exact real-life performance values vs. the in-game values, and more about how do bikes get balanced across the portfolio of bikes offered in game and how does that balance impact key aspects of the experience and progression systems.

I completely understand that people are upset when things get nerfed. I play games, I invest time and effort to get things in games and am annoyed and frustrated when they change. However, this bike was out of balance across the in-game portfolio and this change corrected that error.

As our matrix of bikes and wheels continues to grow every release, you can expect tweaks and balancing changes to continue, but they’ll hopefully less drastic than this one.

It’s also important to note that the requests for a method to sell back or trade in bikes Zwifters no longer want, is something that’s been on our radar for a while. This specific example helps shine a bit more light on that need. This isn’t a promise to deliver that feature of course, but I assure you it’s part of the larger conversation of how we continue to balance the in-game bike and wheel portfolio.

More fidelity in the ratings scale is something I’m looking into as well. Having 4 simple values (there are no “zero” star items) makes evaluating and differentiating items difficult.

So out of curiosity, I’ve created a new account. After logging in (free trial period, brand new few minutes old account), it has the new UI. Meanwhile, my original level 50 / level 21 paid account which is 7 years old is not. I guess I’m simply not worthy :weary:

Trust me, you don’t want the new UI until they have got the remaining missing features added to it.

If you have a friend riding on Zwift, you cannot join them unless you ride to somewhere on the same route and wait or do a u-turn.

On the old UI you just chose their name from a list and off you went. It was so easy.

This is supposed to be on the way.
