Recently when doing workouts I’ve noticed that a few of the targets are not being hit while in Erg mode (most are OK). The screenshot shows a bad one - only 299W instead of the expected 350W, having already reached about 340W as the resistance was kicking in, it then reduced the power for a while, and then brings the resistance back in 10-20s later. At the end of the interval it was back up to 350W for the last few seconds. Most of the other intervals were fine. Never noticed that kind of trouble before, but that’s 2 workouts in a row now. Is this a Zwift thing? An App thing (was using the phone app as well)? A Wahoo Kickr (using v5 with Direct Connect) thing? Or just a me thing! Pretty constant cadence so it’s not that.
When you say “an app thing” do you mean you see this behavior in the Wahoo Fitness app? Because if you do then I’d contact Wahoo support. If you haven’t used the Wahoo app to test ERG mode that would be something to try.
Thanks Paul. I meant the Zwift app (I never use the Wahoo one, but that’s a good idea to try as a separate check). And yes as far as I can remember it’s showing lower power in the Zwift app too (I didn’t check that today). One idea I have is that the Zwift app is connecting to a different wifi signal on occasion and maybe it’s fighting Zwift on Erg mode. But that’s just an uneducated guess.
My Wahoo Kickr v5 was developing some noise in the flywheel last year. In parallel it also was not holding the wattage intervals as smoothly as before anymore. I contacted Wahoo support and they sorted me out.
My previous V5 developed a “death rattle” problem too and it was quickly replaced by Wahoo. Hoping that this one doesn’t require replacing!

Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Have you tried rebooting your router? When issues with Wahoo Direct connect crop up - it’s usually a local network issue, Power cycling the router, the trainer, and the computer running Zwift usually help. If your trainer is hard wired with an Ethernet cable - check the ends of the cable, and make sure the connection is clean and solidly connected.
Sidebar: I’m looking through your server logs for the past couple of weeks, and and your KICKR v5 was paired using a mix of Blueooth and ANT+ on several occasions. Was that you intentionally choosing those instead of Direct Connect to see what happens? We recommend you connect your Power, Control and Cadence signals using one method. In particular - ANT+ can be more problematic than helpful these days, and we recommend you unplug the ANT dongle from your computer unless some device (an old Garmin heart rate monitor for ex) broadcasts ANT only.
Thank you, Shuji! Yes, I think your second paragraph may have hit the nail on the head! I raced last night and noticed by chance that ANT+ was connected to the resistance and figured that might be the source of the problem, with the two signals fighting each other. I’ve yet to test it in a workout. I’m not sure how the connection changes from DC to something else (might be me, but I don’t think so, or possibly during a Zwift update) but it’s a great idea to remove the dongle. Feeling hopeful!
