Instead of the freerun starting before the grade, it dumps me onto the route right before the wood bridge on the Epic KOM. Both Zwift on Android and PC behave the same
That appears to be correct behavior according to “Epic Run” Route Details (Watopia) | Zwift Insider
You only go up the Grade in an event on that route. 
Thanks, that’s rather annoying, I wanted the full suffer (I guess I’ll have to create an event)
Shuji at Zwift HQ here. Confirming that is the correct spawn point for Epic Run when not in an event.
For events, there needs to be a start paddock. That happens to be the Southern Coast paddock + a lead-in distance to reach the normal spawn point for this route.
