I was in a group ride today with over 1000 entrants. My avatar rarely sat up in the saddle, despite being in a huge bunch for the whole 50km.
I know there is a limitation on the number of riders shown in the mini-map (I believe you only see the 100 nearest to you)
Is there a similar limitation on the draft, in a huge field? I’m not sure if I was rarely getting a draft, or whether I was getting one but the avatar animation to sit up in the draft was rarely working.
I didn’t know that about Tron riders. I presume they still get draft, even though they are not sitting up?
But anyway, we were going comfortably over 33kph for most of this ride; it was mostly flat.
Several people were asking if draft was even enabled for the ride, because they were seeing the same thing I guess. But riders did occasionally sit up, so I think it must have been.
I’m wondering if Zwift can’t cope with the draft calculations when there are that many people in a ride. Or maybe it’s just an issue with showing the animations.
Definitely can cope; as it only takes into account the nearest 100 riders to you (generally ahead, sometimes a handful behind), in all situations; so the remaining 900 other riders… wont’ really have an effect regardless, as the data of their existence isn’t even being sent to you; outside of chat, which is unrelated on the physics side of things.
As far as sitting up or not goes; was it a banded ride? Wonder if that produced some wonkiness.
Without knowing what the ride is, we can only make assumptions.
But it’s definitely not related to number of folks on a group ride; as again, Zwift only sends you data to 100 riders nearest you; draft benefit doesn’t really mean anything after somewhere around 6-8 riders if I recall.
Of course, type of bike matters as well; if it were open bike selection, and banded, folks could’ve been on MTBs, Buffalos, Tri, Concept, etc. which all have different animations (or lack them)
I agree. I did some of this PAS ride, and was in a pack most of the time, but getting my avatar to sit up seemed really sensitive, as by appearances I should have been in a draft a lot more than my avatar indicated.
