Honestly @shooj is 2gb of ram now getting too low for zwift…? Given how long iPads last there probably will be a lot out there that the game has now outgrown. Problem is you can’t add new ram sticks to them…
Oh, we hear you. Over time, operating systems also take up a bigger memory footprint and eats up its share of available RAM leaving less headroom for apps.
We work hard to economize our app’s RAM footprint and keep Zwift running smoothly on lower-memory devices so that they’re viable as long as possible.
A2436 allways crashing
iPad A2198 3GB RAM, 35mins today with no crash. Hope it stays that way
Hi @Michael_Born7323, the A2436 model iPad should have around 8GB of RAM. If it’s crashing, it may not be due to the memory issue most folks on this thread are experiencing. If you are still experiencing crashes in 1.47.2, please reach out to us at Community Support and we’ll be glad to troubleshoot with you.
Hey all - a v 1.48.2 patch for iOS and Apple TV is available in the App Store. It should address the crashes reported in this thread. Please let us know if does / does not, and thanks for your patience!
Haven’t had a game crash since the latest updates, but still get bluetooth connection drop out if i use pnp for apple tv. Always worked before the august update.
I’m not sure about crashes but after about 50 minutes into my ride, the screen became choppy, updating about every 5-10 seconds. I finished the ride and it took about 10 times longer to save the ride.
@shooj I’m also experiencing the extreme choppiness on my iPad, so I thought I’d add details about my experience. Today I did the Petit Boucle route, and after I hit the Pavé Sprint Reverse segment the graphics slowed to a crawl. Eventually, the choppiness wasn’t as bad, but for the rest of the ride at no time were the graphics smooth. They got really bad again on the way back through that same area, later in the route. I used the companion app to save and didn’t have any issues - saved as quickly as usual.
I’m on Zwift v.1.48.2, and my iPad is 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th Gen), which according to everymac has 6GB of RAM - so, per your definition it’s not a “low memory” device.
Note that the last time I used Zwift before today’s ride was 8/11/23, and I didn’t have any issues (it was only a 25 minute ride, though, and was in Watopia).
Hi @Todd_Tucker1 and @illyanadmc
I checked both of your server logs, and noticed that you’re both using the same iPad model (iPad8,11). At the time you wrote in, both of your tablets were using iOS 16.6.1.
Todd - since then, you’ve updated yours to iOS 16.7.0. Did that make any difference for you?
Both of you - something we can’t see in your server logs is how much free storage space your tablets have. Here’s how to find out. Would you let us know how much free space you have?
RAM is not the same thing as storage. Even if you have 6 GB RAM, iOS16 uses storage as virtual RAM, so the amount of free storage space may be an important factor in your cases.
Also - are other apps running in the background on that iPad at the same time you’re Zwifting? If yes - which ones?
Latest Ipados 16.7.1, Zwift 1.50. Crash after 53 minutes. Only 2 minutes in log from begining of event (log process hanged, no events from next 53 minutes).
Looked at your server logs and you are also using the same iPad mode (iPad6,11) mentioned directly above yours. We are investigating this crash as an issue that surfaced in recent recent releases, and not one that started with game version 1.50
@shooj Thanks for the follow-up! I’ve done a few Zwift rides since I reported the issue, and I haven’t had any choppiness or other issues. I should note that since I reported the choppiness issue, I disabled video screenshots, so maybe this did the trick?
To answer your question about free storage, I checked and I’m using 991.9 GB of 1.02 TB - yikes! Gotta delete some files off the iPad, it seems. Thanks for showing me how to check that, as I didn’t realize I was so close to the limit. And to answer your other question, whenever I launch Zwift I always make sure to “kill” any other apps which might be running (swipe up to close them).
You can often recover space by backing up the iPad, doing a factory reset, and restoring it, even if you don’t delete anything. This is because some “lost” data ends up accumulating on the device over time, and erasing the device is the only practical way to recover it.
@Paul_Southworth Thanks for the tip! The culprit, in my case, is another virtual cycling app, for which I’ve downloaded a bunch of rides/videos. I deleted some of them and have already freed up 300 GB of storage!
Same issue here, crashed at around 53 minutes! I was doing the workout but got few problem also with erg before the application crash. Ipad OS 17.0.3 (with more than 100gb free) and latest version of zwift. Not a good day to crash in week 5 of build me up plan
Joining the thread with iPad connection issues. NOT crashing but disconnecting. - I uploaded iPadOS 16.7.1 this morning and experienced about 13 “connection disconnected” errors in a 1.5 hr ride. I confirmed both a solid Wi-Fi connection, and bluetooth connection during the ride. Both Zwift version on the iPad and ZCA on iPhone are running the latest versions.
After an update, the iPad will spend some time doing optimizations that will affect performance, so if that’s what you ran into, it should get better with time. You can also get a small performance boost by going into Settings → General → Background App Refresh and turning it off for apps that you don’t need to have running when they are not in the foreground.
Thanks for the info @Paul_Southworth - I didn’t even think of the background refresh!
Every ride that I have taken the system has crashed in approx. 40min without saving the progress. I have Windows 11 system on my pc. I hope they fix this problem soon. If it wont get fixed soon I maybe have to pause the subscription or cancel it.
