Anyway, went to race today only to find my partner has stolen the Zwift click along with her bike < cue small moment of rage > so some frantic ‘Can I shift gears without a click?’ searching ensued. There seemed to be some suggestion that this was possible with one of the Zwift apps but also information saying ‘No, you absolutely cannot.’ Which is it?
Disappointed, I thought I’d give it (racing) a go anyway. It turned out to be hard work but not terrible. Does anyone know what gear I was racing in / what the trainer is doing in terms of effort required to turn it when there’s no shifting? I think I have resistance set to 30% and it felt like I was riding in the 15th or 16th gear for the whole race (when I really prefer a lower gear / higher cadence).
I’m not really sure but if you didn’t have the Click connected then aren’t you cycling in the gear that is on your bike. What size of chainring were you riding in and how many teeth on your rear gear/cog ? Front divided by rear and compare to what virtual gear that would equate to.
Ah, good point, now I’m embarassed - that didn’t even occur to me, I assumed that the trainer assumed something. Well, I was on the large front chainring (50) and the Zwift cog.
Not now but I will have to have a look at how shifting to the smaller front ring feels - that might allow me to race more comfortably before the Zwift click gets restored to its rightful place
I am slightly wincing though after watching some of the Giro ITT today, I think some riders were opting for a 68 tooth front chainring, terrifying
Are you talking about the Trainer Difficulty setting? That only adjusts resistance on climbs and descents since it is scaling the gradient that the trainer thinks you are on. So as you lower Trainer Difficulty, you get less resistance on climbs, more resistance on descents, and no change on flat roads. It just makes the trainer think hills are flatter.
Yes, that’s what I’m talking about and no, I didn’t appreciate this ‘flattened out hills’. I thought it applied at all times. As an side I wonder whether this contributes to making it feel like I have work quite hard on descents.
But today the resistance seemed constant i.e. no alteration in force required regardless of flat / hill / descent (obviously easier on a descent because of game physics but hope you understand what I mean).
