Beginner: Macbook and Garmin workouts questions

Hey all, in couple of weeks I would start Zwifting with my MacBook Pro M1. I recently got into road biking and so far following a structured workout routine on Garmin.

As summer is coming to an end, we’re facing a lot of rain here so looking to get into Zwift to continue my workout in upcoming weeks. I’m doing about 2 x Zone 2 trainings and 2 x interval trainings.

Gear for now:

  • Wahoo Kickr Core (considering to buy)
  • Zwift’s Ride with hub/cog (considering to buy)
  • Macbook Pro M1
  • Garmin Edge 1050
  • Garmin Dual HRM

I have a couple of questions for this community:

  1. How is Zwift running on a Macbook Pro M1?
  2. Are there known issues using Garmin Dual HRM with Macbook Pro M1 and Zwift? I have a Garmin Edge 1050, if this is relevant. I come across lots of topics about not being able to connect with each other?
  3. Is there a way to do your Garmin workout via Zwift and have your Training Effect etc visible as a workout done with Garmin Edge? (I do not care about badges). I currently have my Zwift-account connected to Strava and Garmin Connect.
  4. Should I connect my Edge with the smart trainer or not?
  5. With the Zwift Ride; do I still need to have my laptop near me? I would use an HDMI cable from the macbook to my TV in the living room to have a big screen.

I read a lot of topics but most are outdated/couple of years old so not sure if above mentioned questions are still relevant.

I’ve never had a problem with the HRM-DUAL with Zwift

On the Zwift pairing screen, do not pair the trainer for Resistance. Instead pair it to the 1050 and let the Garmin device control resistance so you can execute the ERG mode workout on the Garmin. In Zwift you can just do a free ride while the 1050 controls the trainer. Only one thing can control the trainer at a time.

Only if you need access to the keyboard/mouse to control the game. A lot of things you would do with a keyboard could be done via the Companion app, or a wireless keyboard.

Is there a way to do Garmin workouts without using the ERG-mode and use the trainer as resistance, just basically free riding in Zwift but still completing my workouts for Garmin and Training Effect?

I’m mostly focusing zone 2 training while I can’t go out due to weather. ERG is not really needed for me. Only for FTP-tests.
